Was just checking out the 430 prices to see how they're doing, no intention of selling but nice to know that an equivalent car to mine is selling for only 9k less than what I paid 3 years ago, but that not important right now, what really pains me is seeing ads like this

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3790649.htm

A 2006 F430, 6 years old with 509 miles on the clock! 509, what the hell, 84 miles a year average, why do people do it, the owner might aswell have enjoyed it so that when he takes it up the rear with depreciation at least there would have been some smiles with miles. What annoys me even more is that they think they can get even more money for it with it's likely dried out oil seals etc and all the problems of a new car to be found by the overpaying new owner now that the car is out of warranty. Crazy!

Anyway that was all smile

Indeed, what a waste. Some people have funny ideas when it comes to running cars. To leave a car like that sitting pretty much still for all those years is sinfull!

They emphasise the mileage, I'm assuming thats a warning;) buy that and the first thing you have to do is have the tyres replaced, then it would need a good going over mechanically, think how gummed up the fuel injection system will be etc. But your right, its sad, very sad!

Sad and Mad!

It will be bought by someone who also doesnt want to drive it and tell everyone they have a 'mint' 430. Their money, their car but pissies me off when people then claim to be enthusiasts! I have met guys with these cars when show them off by going into the garage and start them up and rev them up to make a nice noise, usually with a sports exhaust you couldn't use in any long range driving.
Then when they take them out they cant be driven as people are scared of blowing them up under load.

I do lots of old, very low mileage cars. Every one that comes into the workshop without exception, has problems caused by lack of use; some of them potentially very expensive, e.g. seized piston rings, calipers, etc.

Moisture build up is a killer, particularly in Scotland, so keep on using your cars!

Sad thing is I think he probably has made as much profit on it sitting in garage a you would have lost owning one

Annoying thing is you see it regularly on car forums "which model should I buy as an investment" if we knew we'd all buy them if we could afford it

It's like asking what shares should I invest in to make a killing

Buy it Drive it Enjoy it and take pity on us who cant and just look smile

frown If cars could cry, that would fill a swimming pool. Built purely to deliver smiles on the road, sitting rotting. For shame.

It's a one owner car so the guy has made no profit, he's probably lost £30k+ by keeping it in his garage and never driving it. Not a very good financial decision smile

Indeed there was a case over on the Cerbera Section just a few month ago about a chap who bought a 2000 Cerb with only 970 miles on the clock. Within the first 200 miles of his ownership it has developed all kinds of serious issues. No car likes to be laid up for years on end much better with a well cared for and used one. Such a waste of good fun.

I probably read this one here, but a quote which always sticks in my mind is

"Not wanting to put miles of your Ferrari is just like not having sex with your girlfriend, purely to keep her more desirable for the next man"

Agree it's crazy! Never understood the point of having a car and not using it - particularly if it is still going to depreciate anyway!

The market does seem to be obsessed with low mileage on Ferrari's. While I've been looking around at 360's anything with 30-40k plus (on a 10-12 year old car) seems to be considered high mileage! Even though everyone seems to say that you're likely to more problems with cars that haven't been used.

What's worse than this... Which must be quite common for many owners who can afford to have many cars, is people who moan about it,

I'd also rather buy a low mileage car, get fresh tyres and a good service than a high mileage car with many worn parts and abuse from an unsympathetic owner.

+ 1.

I've bought many (more than 10) very low mileage cars for personal use and never had one single issue of the types described. Wouldn't even consider a second user car with even average miles on it, never mind high miles. And that's because you can guarantee more wear and tear issues on a more used car, regardless of how sympathetic its previous user(s) were or how fastidiously it was maintained.

As to WHY someone buys something they don't use much, or at all - how long have you got? Haven't we all done this with something at some time? Why should it be any different because the 'something' is a car? It's often done in property - especially foreign property, and most especially with a type of property that makes the cost of a 430 seem like small change.

All very well for you, Mr Five Toys, but ah'm sittin' here on my one decent me-time break of the week with nuthin' to drive except for a German businessman's borebox and a gurrl's white gayman (not even an 'S'). The telly's developed 'poor signal quality', The Gers are down the toilet and the bds have resold my season book anyway, the witch at the Bothwell Medical Centre's ordered 'half an hour's exercise a day', the tories are stopping housing benefit, there's a mega detour on the M8 offramp, and I can't even look forward to church anymore in case the minister turns up with a bloody wife called Robert, or Davy or Bill.

So excuse some minor contrarianism, but if November (and some Real Wheels) doesn't come super-soon, I'll be drinking at the Old Rope and Tree.furious

Do you want me to come around and bring one the toys and take you for a wee run? Got the red fiat in the garage as going to a private track night on tuesday and may get my youngest to drive her around the track as she has never driven one of the toys before. And BTW it's 6 not 5! I count my real Fiats as toys! TBH the wee lido is perhaps the nicest drive!

Glad you got that off your chest and managed to possibly insult more groups in one post than most people manage in a lifetime!
