My mate has bought an old racing car with 13" wheels. He's struggling to find new tyres the right size.

He has :

150 / 515/ r13 (front)
200 / 550 / r13 (rear)

Can anyone recommend a place for these size of tyres. Or is there a modern size equivalent ?

Hi there,

That's fairly common parlance for competition tyres.

The first part of the number is the tread width

The second part is the outside diameter, useful to know this when you are calculating gear ratios etc

As for stockists, try Demon Tweeks initially, or maybe EARS.

Cheers for the replies.
I think he'd like to get the Toyo r888's on his car. What size would fit ?

Hi

They won't - there isn't sizes in their range that are close enough really, they'll end up being too wide and tall at the front and too narrow at the rear.

Yokohama's get a bit closer, as they come down to a 175/50/R13 which isn't a million miles off for the front, and you might get away with a 205/60 at the back which is about 10mm larger radius than you currently have.

However if it's a race car, and never going to see the road - Avon's from BMTR as mentioned above would be your best bet, you can get them in the sizes you want and they're the right type of tyre for proper track work.

If you go on Toyo, Avon or Yokohama's web site they show their tyres with the diameter listed in mm so you can work out for yourself how to cross refer the two types of tyre measurement.

HTH.
