Nothing new there.

The only difference, is this time they are openly doing it.

Some of the offenses, like the shopping bags with no receipt, is atrocious and illegal, but they will do it!

The A22 ANPR toll is a weird one, you have to wait a few days before you can pay, which of course you can't on your last day going back to the aeroporto.

Looks like it's more than likely a non story.

We usually get over to the Algarve a couple of times a year - you very rarely see the police doing anything other than standing around in their shiny boots and sunglasses, eyeing up the women and smoking 'Gigante' cigarettes!

The GNR aren't much better - you sometimes see them plodding along in a 20-odd year old 4x4, but little more than that - they certainly wouldn't have a hope of catching a hire car if they were to give chase!

One British resident of the Algarve, who asked to remain anonymous, was stopped by police while driving last month. Although her paperwork was in order, she claims that authorities were only pulling over foreign-registered cars, and says she saw an elderly British couple having their vehicle confiscated.

Would this be an ex-pat still on UKPlates then. We have the same here in France cars should be registered locally but many don't bother so end up with no MOT and dubious insurance (UK policies normally have limited cover)

The police often have a clampdown on this but then it's justified.

A bit too late to target tourists who leave their kids in hotels to go to tapas bars sadly-

A good friend of mine who spends a good deal of time in Portugal told me today when I said about the Telegraph, that if you have had a couple of drinks and get a tug that as long as there are €150 in your driving licence when you hand it over for inspection now that you will be let go without any further questions.

I'd rather go on holiday to a place where you don't drive around in fear of being fleeced by the local police.
