Track day tyre conundrum!
Discussion
I've currently got Dunlop SP9000's (or something like that!) on the front & rear.
The fronts have plenty of tread left 6mm+ I would have thought, but the rears need changing.
The edges are fine, with 3mm+ in places, but the middle section is a bit borderline (my fault for not checking them too thoroughly)
I've got a track day booked for a couple of weeks time (Llandow) and I don't know what to do with my tyres.
If I had a spare set of wheels/tyres I would probably keep the Dunlop's on for the trackday and switch them over to come home, as I highly doubt they will be legal after the track day.
I'm reluctant to get new tyres fitted before-hand, as I'm not likely to be able to drive it much before, so they will be very fresh tyres (which it seems isn't the best idea)
The options at the moment seem to be:
- Stick with the tyres, hope they are still legal to drive home, then get new one's fitted (not a preferred option)
- Get new tyres fitted this week, but they won't have been driven much before the TD.
- Find a spare set of rear wheels to put new tyres on for the drive home
- Fit some decent part worns for the TD, and get some proper tyres fitted afterwards (not sure about this)
Sorry for making a simple question so long! And if anyone has a spare set of wheels (with legal tyres!) please let me know.
Cheers

Anything other than a Track/road legal tyre are nothing more than a joke on the track
I found out the hard way when spinning a few times at Cadwell park
If your going to be serious about track days buy another set of wheels with something like R888`s
Problem is if you use these tyres on the road they don`t last very long.
If money was no object i would use the Toyo R1R`s ,don`t think there far behind the R888`.

I would like to think I'll start doing more track days, but I don't think R1Rs or R888s are really an option at the moment.
I don't fancy going there with brand new tyres, so I may try and see if I can find a spare set of wheels with some decent tyres on, and use them as track wheels/spares maybe.
R888 is equal to Yokohama A048, and R1R is equal to Yokohama AD08.
Peter have you had any experience with the Yokohama`s, there more afordable for me .
Which compound is the one to go for ? road and a few trackdays.
Anyone tried hankoks

OR: Arrange for a mobile tyre fitter to come to the circuit at the end of the day. (Or book in for new tyres at the closest place to the track and book to pop in on your way home thus minimising the journey on shot tyres. Getting them to the track is preferable. Some even have on site facilities if you can get your new ones bought and carried there.) HTH

That is a very sensible option, one that I hadn't considered!I'll find out whether they'll have a tyre fitter, and might order some new tyres for the way home!
Thanks

I've got Dunlop SP9000's on mine and they are rubbish on the road so suspect they'll be shocking on the track.
FFG
Although I have nothing to compare them to, I've had no problems with mine so far, even considering the lack of tread on the rears. I've driven them in the wet a few times too and not had any issues. FFG
I'll see how they compare to the Toyo's I'll probably get next.
Im wondering if these would work ,track day road legal tyre which is affordable.available in my sizes
Can anyone explain about the compounds ,which one is the best compromise Soft, medium or hard

peter, when your r888`s get nice and hot do you find it a little bit slippy at times on the back end?
found this on mine a couple of times, just wondered if its a characteristic of the tyre, its not like the slide you feel in a corner on a wet patch, more of a small gradual movement?

Your right Clive. When they're hot you can drift the whole car in a controlled manner.found this on mine a couple of times, just wondered if its a characteristic of the tyre, its not like the slide you feel in a corner on a wet patch, more of a small gradual movement?
This usually happens sometime in the afternoon when I know the track and feel that I'm well "on it"! That point is usually at the edge of my talent envelope
