Ridiculous Insurance Quote
Discussion
Thinking of buying a S1 111S in the not to distant future so thought it wise to get myself an insurance quote.
Elephant have quoted me £5,300!!!
I'm 24, no NCB (been a named driver on another policy) and two SP50's. Told them that the car would be off the road at night and that I'd fit Tracker if necessary. Knew I'd be looking at a big quote (I was thinking £1,500) but that't just silly.
Any tips from anyone gratefully received as if I can't improve on that I wont be getting a Lotus!
Cheers

Some companies will offer an introductory NCB for named drivers on other policies (eg. spouses) or company car drivers.
To be honest, you would be better off using a specialist broker in this case as the mainstream companies may not be flexible enough.
Make sure you stress your number of years of claim-free motoring. If you can provide documentary evidence (eg. a letter from the policyholder of the policy on which you were a named driver or a letter from your Fleet Manager) then this will strengthen your case.
Incidentally, an outrageously high quote is just a polite way of saying "
off, we don't want your business."

Muncher,
did you do an online quote or ring them up in person? People tell me that online is cheaper but I'm not so sure.
Other people my age, though admitedly with 2 or 3 years NCB seem to be paying £1,000 - £1,500 which is where I want to be really.
I've got my heart set on a 111S but does anyone think a standard Elise will be a lot cheaper to insure? I think there'd only be a small difference, £150 or something similar.
Cheers for all the replies so far!

Try Adrian Flux, avoid anything which isn't bog standard if you want the cheapest quote.
You should be looking at around £1500+ if experience is anything to go by. Either way you'll get hosed but as noted above, anything ridiculous is just a way of wasting your time to avoid the paperwork.
Search the forums here and see what you can do - also remember that joining a club like SELOC will often attract discounts with some insurers - Adrian Flux for instance give a 10% discount... not to be sniffed at!
