Went out for a blast today. Was great fun until the engine bay burst into flames at a junction!!!

As i pulled up to the A31 I smelt fuel, then there was a 'thump' & the next thing I saw were flames and smoke from under the bonnet. Apparently it's impossible to break the speed of light but I reckon I managed it getting out! Presuming a fuel line split or something but who knows.

Maybe it'll T-Cut out? eek

Really sorry to see.

From the location of the fire it does look like it's probably a split fuel line. However the damage doesn't look bad enough to me for it to be a write off, though obviously we advent seen under the bonnet yet.

But no one was hurt and that's the main thing. :-)

Basically, everything was melted! Insurance company reckons it'll be a total loss sadly.

As you say though, no injuries & now to find a replacement

So sorry to see that. Pleased you got out. Always a danger of slipping on warm, fresh mud in these situations.

I work in accident repair, and I can tell you now a fibreglass car that's caught on fire wont be a cheap fix

Ideal for some one that's want to give the chassis a full refurb and a engine transplant IMO,

Plus all the interior will be damaged

Burnt hard for 5 minutes & then something water related let go in a cloud of steam and the fire was put out & that stopped it from going entirely. It smoldered on for 5 minutes more before the fire dudes turned up and put it out. Under the bonnet it was mangled. The big pipes from the intake to the airbox were completely gone along with anything else plastic, it looked very unwell.

Sad eh? It was just about to peel out of that junction and catapult itself towards the horizon.
Only had it serviced a month ago too and it was running super sweet.
My mate nicknamed it Satans Racecar so it had a fairly apt demise!

It looks like it was a lovely example. Gutted for you. Hope there's a happy ending somewhere in it all..

Would any form of in-cockpit fire extinguisher have helped do you think ?? I have been meaning to get one, or a pair and strap them to the roll cage...

Terrible news frown

Just glad no one was hurt. Did you put the flames out yourself ? The bonnet looks in reasonable shape. So im guessing you did.

I keep a fire extinguisher in the helmet holder. Better safe than sorry.
