Fault Code Reader
Discussion
My understanding is that any petrol engined car made for the European market after 2001 and any diesel engined car made after 2004 has to be OBD11 compliant. That means any OBD11 scanner should work on any car built after those dates.
I believe - but not tried on pre 2001 XJs though - the XJ8 was actually OBD11 compliant from launch. I have a Autel Maxiscan MS309 which not only reads fault codes but also tells you what that code means. It will not however decipher manufacturer specific codes, which I have if you need them. The scanner cost about £18 from the Bay of E and the supplier accepted returns if it didn't work so what's to loose?
Trac Fail or Track Not Available message flashing on start up is often caused by nothing more than excessive voltage drop from a weak or poorly charged battery. Might be worth a 12 to 24 hour charge with a battery charger to make sure the battery is at maximum capacity. If the battery is still drawing some current after charging for this length of time then it's on it's way out.

Thanks Steve. The trac control warning could well be the battery. The garage were jumping starting the car the other day when I went to collect it due to battery having gone flat.
Do you by any chnace know the ebay sellers user ID, the cheapest I can find from a UK seller is £37.99?
Would you also possibly be able to send me the manufacturer specific codes, they would be very useful to have?
Cheers!
Mike

E bay seller is called astonbarck - he's got a similar scanner to mine listed for £19.95. Looks like this one comes with a CD listing all the fault codes.
Can't upload the list of Jaguar specific codes on here and you may not need them with this scanner anyway. PM me with your mail address if you do need them and I'll attach and send to you

You are almost correct. The dates you mention above are for EOBD. OBDII is not the same.I believe - but not tried on pre 2001 XJs though - the XJ8 was actually OBD11 compliant from launch.
However, the Jaguar XJ8 was OBDII compliant from launch (American-based software) which means that OBDII code-readers will work. But if buying a code reader check it will read OBDII and not just EOBD. Plenty out there.
There's also plenty of sources for Jaguar fault codes on the net. Here's one:

- I hadn't realised there was a such a long period of time with two different OBD protocols running. S6 Devil said:
Just had the codes read and I have C1175 and C1165 which are apparently rear wheel input sensors.
Any idea what these would be and what I need to change to fix it? I can't find these on any parts list!
