Something I was thinking about today on a long drive home from a weekend in London. I've been driving for nearly 30 years, so what have I learnt, and what would I advise a young me starting out?

Came up with two particular thoughts I'd pass on.

There is no point getting involved in "road rage". Hard to put into practice when some dumb idiot has done something really stupid, but try and accept that you just have to drive around the idiots. They'll never learn.

If you drive at 75 not 95 on a motorway, amazingly you still get there!! And you save a useful amount of fuel and get to keep a clean licence.

So what would you tell a young you if you could?

Do not - under any circumstances - buy an Austin Allegro. I bought a 1300 followed by an Equipe......

Do not - under any circumstances - sell your beloved Triumph TR6 to pay for your own wedding.

Get a bank loan or, better still, make sure that your (now ex) wife's parents actually pay for their daughters wedding & do not promise to 'settle up with you later' which they never did.

Buy the Sapphire Cosworth instead of the three other cars you wasted the money on that never quite matched the expected thrill of the Cossie.

I'm still young.

I can imagine myself in 3 years time:

Matt-that BMW you got, stop turning the traction control off, you spent 40000000 pounds on rubber in two weeks.

I'm assuming a very bad accident took place?

Always be prepared to meet yourself coming the other way.

Taken from these pages. I can't recall the poster, but the poster's Father was the originator.

Could have been worse. On balance i could make the argument that it probably made me take more care since, but maybe not.

Still much rather not have had it though.

I wouldn't have listened even if the advice was coming from a time traveller.

Rear wheel drive, wet weather and Michelin X tyres are not a good combination.

Do Not buy a Jensen Healey

do not go home on the A350 in

Dad's Rover 3500
Sisters 2CV
on Kawasaki AR80.

You would then avoid getting rear ended in the Rover, T boned in the Citroen and a seizure on the bike.

You might have a st job now, but save your money instead of going out to get pissed up and pee all over everything Every week and you can have the M5 you've been checking the classifieds for every week, you can even insure it and tax it too with plenty of change.

That is what my tax returns have told me.

My Dad used to say that to me!

I must be sensible now, as he now says watch out for the other idiots...

The fastest car is not always the most fun.

Check the nearside rear wishbone on the mazda.

Always carry a 2p coin when driving the old speedster.

That guy painting the bridge is actually a policeman with a speed camera.

When you take Joanna out for a quick drink, take the discovery it has more room than the Z4. (Oh and its a muzzleloader the clasp is at the front)
