PS3 Controller Connection Problem

Hi all! Bored on a bank holiday with crappy weather so may tackle this problem I currently have.

Had my PS3 for years with 2 controllers. About a fortnight ago I turned the PS3 on with the controller as usual, the machine fired up, but the 4 lights kept blinking on the controller until I plugged the USB cable in to register it. This is now happening with both controllers.

However, if I turn the PS3 on with its button, then press the PS button on either controller, they register fine and I can play.

I can't understand this; the controllers are both registered to the machine and play fine for hours, but just won't register if I turn the machine on with either controller.

I've reset both controllers and turned the PS3 off with the button at the back but to no avail.

Anybody else had this?

Have you tried connecting both controllers with the USB to register them both. Could be a conflict?

Yes, about a year ago. I'm really sorry but can't remember how I sorted it. I searched Google with ps3 flashing controler error or words to that effect and followed instructions until it fixed.

In the end it was something to do with loosing charge and needing to be reset. There is a small reset button on ps3 controler, I'm sure that was involved.

Found it.

Try reassigning the controller , i'll explain .
on the back of the controller , the middle section , there should be a small rectangle with a tiny button in it , press that button with a thumb or finger nail or a pencil , if the lights on the controller do not flash then you need a new controller , you may have a battery problem with the controller , you need to see if the lights on your current controller flash when it isn't connected to the PS3

Thank you both for your replies. Sorry I've not responded sooner. An update:

I've tried the reset button on the back of both controllers to no avail so tonight I assigned one of mine to my brother's PS3. It turned on his PS3 and assigned to number 1 automatically as usual. When I go back to mine and assign it back the lights stay blinking.

This leads me to believe there's something wrong with my PS3 itself. Would you agree?

Power on using the power on button on the ps3, but keep it held down untill it beeps twice.

Thanks for your advice, but sadly I've just tried this to no avail. I get the feeling I'm gonna have to put up with this indefinitely now.

Oh and thanks to the prat above for suggesting I use the wire. Presumably you mean the USB cable? Pleb.
