No Panel Lights

All of my instrument lights have stopped working, but the clock and the heater and light switch lights are still OK. It's not the fuse (I've checked that and anyway It's the same fuse as the clock). So what's it likely to be and where do I start looking?

Did you inadvertentently push the button under the dash (opposite side of the steering column to the boot release) with your knee?

No- but my son thought it was the boot release, and having owned it for 5 years I didn't know it was there!
