Black, white and silver.
Discussion
So I was staying at The Lowry Hotel on the outskirts of Manchester on Sunday night and took this picture of the car park from my fourth floor window and it looked like this:

The car park was a sea of luxury saloons and 4x4s all in black, white or silver. At the top right of the picture was a Civic Type R all on it's own in red. I'm as guilty as anyone for being a sheep as my black S6 was nestled amongst that lot.

I don't know what's sadder the lack of imagination from the owners regarding colour ot the fact you took a picture of the car park :-)
I thought that, but then realised it was an opportunity for the worst "I have an S6" post ever.
Guilty as charged on the second comment...
It is a business hotel, most of the clientele will be mainly company cars and fleet managers generally have a fit if anyone goes for an oddball colour or god forbid something that isnt a 2.0 Tdi.
Alternatively it may be the fact there is a lot of Grim in the air in Salford, thus obscuring a rainbow display of mid spec Audi's and BMW's, all in different, vibrant colours.

Does anyone else find purple and yellow cars appealing?
yes. Yellow looks great on sporty little things (mostly Italian!) and Purple, especially midnightish darkish purple, looks good on lots of cars. The colour of my car is even growing on me, and I didn't dislike it to begin with!

Could be a company having a meeting there and they've all pitched up in their company cars? We've had a couple of meetings at the Lowry in the past and when we were there the car park would have been almost entirely black, dark blue or dark grey. (White was banned from the company car list)
The only problem I have with the general dreariness of the shades that other people pick is that it discourages manufacturers from offering interesting shades in the first place.
For a short time I owned three yellow cars to try and even up the balance (an MX-5, an RX-8 and a Capri). The rotary lemon has since made way for a red XKR, but it's worth remarking that, at a time when most people were struggling to get £3k for their similar vintage RX-8s, mine went for over £4k.
If every other car like yours is also the same colour, what would be the reason for Mr A Punter to choose yours? Don't get me started on the ubiquity of black leather interiors in anything vaguely posh too - they sell sofas in different colour leathers too, don't they? Grrrrrr...
