Good news on Disco 4 ?
Discussion
I would really like to get a Discovery 4 but happened across the www.landroverhell.com site. Looking at this site one could be forgiven for thinking that every Discovery 4 breaks down everyday. I am sure there must be happy owners out there somewhere? Please tell me how happy you are with yours, or is it true that they are all as reliable as a chocolate teapot?
For the record I currently have a Disco 2 that I have had for ten years and has done 250,000 miles. Been on AA wagon once!

Don't you just love research on the net.
Had a Disco 3 for 3 years and coming up for the third full year in a Disco 4. Only a couple of minor niggles with a rear door lock not working on the Disco 3. Disco 4 had the window on the rear nearside stop auto closing and the touch screen stopped working but was an easy fix.
Rest of the time it has been the best car I have ever owned.
Hope this goes some way to redressing the balance

had a disco3 for 3 years, totally reliable except for one breakdown due to EGR valve failure - had a Disco4 for 2 years, totally reliable except for one breakdown due to EGR valve failure...a pattern is emerging. having said that they both have had a hard life and we loved/love them, best family car in the world by far.
We're lucky enough to have a 12MY Disco 4 as a company car; only 11k on the clock so far but it hasn't missed a beat. As has been said before, there will always be people writing things on the internet about how awful their car has been (almost whatever the make) but for every one of those there will be thousands whose experiences have been quite the opposite.
I have had a Disco 4 for 3 years now. It had a turbo changed when new (they apparently all had the same problem) and the battery went dead very quickly so that was sorted with a software upgrade. Otherwise it has been completely faultless. I do not use it regularly (it sits in my garage in my house in Austria) so even after prolonged periods of no use it has been excellent. I do keep it on a trickle charger however. Great car - probably the best in the current Landrover line-up.
60-plate D4 from January 2011. Currently sat on 19,000 miles. Just got it's first replacement tyres due. Only been back to a workshop once and that was for the upper boot release switch to be replaced because it failed.
No problems with oil use (just dropped one mark so far since new), smoke, or abnormal breakages.
Dr Rick
ps - I'm probably now doomed.

We are new to the Disco 4 HSE this year. I had a Defender MANY years ago. The Disco was bought to replace a '56 Merc R320 which did a great job. The Disco "knocks the Merc into a cocked hat" as my father-in-law enthuses. He loves talking about his fishing but when we got the Disco (on which he is insured) all that changed - best car I've ever driven.
Great tourer, roomy, comfortable even with 7 inside, stupidly luxurious for an off-road vehicle. Some have remarked that the interior looks dated but I think that is down to my walnut selection - the 70's must be my decade (I call it retro).
My OH says it is the best car we have ever had. The kids love it. The in-laws pinched it yesterday to go off golfing with their mates (4 adults all with big clubs and electric trolleys accommodated with ease).
In my eyes its only fault is that it generates covetous behaviour...
Sorry about the rave "review" but so far have been blessed with nothing bad to say about the Disco.

Our D4 is only 2 months old with 2000 miles, so I can't report on long term reliability but it has been incredible so far.
My wife is a teacher and had it during the holidays to ferry the kids and extended family around and everyone loves its comfort and space, even with 6 on board. It is back to being mine for the commute now and it is just so relaxing to drive, especially at the end of the day.
Although it has only just arrived I'm dreading having to find a suitable replacement.....

I had an 06\56 Disco 3 for 4 years and 43K miles. Other than scheduled servicing, it only needed a PDC sensor that was replaced under warranty. Depreciation wise, it lost an average of 3,700 per year which is very good for a car of this nature.
It was replaced 2 years ago by a new D4 which has covered approx 20K. To date, it has been faultless. Wish I could say the same for my now departed Porsche Cayenne and Audi RS4

Well spurred on, in part, by rave reviews I took the plunge and bought a 2010 Disco 4 HSE three weeks ago.
During the first week it had to have a speaker replaced that was screaming even when the ICE was off and fuel gauge didn't work properly. It took three days to get fixed by the main dealer. Last night the sat nav and the ICE stopped working and this morning the battery was flat (did a 200 mile run yesterday so surprised the battery was flat).
On the positive side Landrover assist were simply brilliant. And when the disco 4 is all working it is better than any car I have ever had, including the E270 Mercedes, which is still the most unreliable car I have ever had.
So despite the initial problems I am still pleased I went for the Disco 4 HSE.

My wife's Discovery 4 is 2 years old and almost on 80k. Last Monday it expired in a big way when she was about 5 miles North of the Fourth Bridge after dropping me at the airport. Previous to this it has never missed a beat. Full marks to Landrover, they want the engine back to strip down at the factory and are fitting a new engine and turbo. This is our first Discovery after 11 Range Rovers and are delighted with it.

Land Rover warranty is one of the very best available, unlimited mileage for three years. It's a shame the German manufacturers can't offer anything like this. Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
