Start of the new football season and as I'm getting a bit older i've started to notice something I haven't experienced before

From about 1 minute in to the game until about 10-15 minutes, I feel knackered, breathing heavily etc. But from then on I'm fine and feel like I could run for days

Any ideas what this is? Is this the famous second wind that often gets spoken about.

Any tips for being able to go full throttle from minute 1? I'm thinking a harder warm up may be the way forward

I don't t know the scientific explanation but I'd imagine it has something to do with overall fitness, and you're body warming up i.e. muscles warming up and your lungs etc getting used to functioning for increased strain?

See what the subs do before they come on during a game? Running up and down etc...

ISTR something about getting the central nervous system primed for action. For instance, in lifting, you'd do a warm-up set before your normal heavy size; in climbing you'd go for the first pump then stretch/shakes it out which ensures you last the session.

It isn't a scientific fact, so what I might use second wind to describe and what you might, may be different.

To me second wind should come much later in the game. Like after your legs get tired in the second half, but then you get a burst in the last 10 mins.

To help solve your problem in the first 15 mins a much harder warm up. Even if it is just building up to sprints and callisthenics. But finish them maybe 10 mins before the game starts to give your self a chance to recover before the game starts. Its all about getting blood vessels open, temperature up and muscles supple.

Im the same when i go out for a run. The first 10 min are a mere i seem to struggle then im ok after that.

I always put it down to my body just getting used to breathing harder / working harder then it kinda gets used to being at that level.

Now that you write that, I suddenly am thinking of my school days when the mean PE teacher forced us to go for a run in winter. The first few minutes were a real struggle but being a good boy, I kept moving (even though I hate running) and it did become easier.

Normally im thinking oh feck this and hate it when i first go out get to a certain point then i quite enjoy running especially if im doing a more off road run.

Im a member on a running forum a lot of people on that site also have the same feelings. Actually id say it was more people who dont go do big mileage who seem to comment on it more. Maybe its related to how fit you are ?

I think it maybe related to flight or fight responses. When I fought MMA. I would do a really intense warm up. Try get the initial adrenalin dump under control and then perform in a more measured way.

If I remember right at the beginning of exercise your body does adapt/ use the available oxygen very well and then after a few minutes the body works itself out and transports oxygen more efficiently for aerobic exercise.
There is a better write up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobic_exercise

Yeah I get this. First 5 minutes I'm all over the shop, then calm down and whey, we're off.

When I fought Muay Thai our trainer would warm me up to the point I was sweating buckets, and knackered, to the point you thought feck this, I'm going to die in there.

But, as soon as the bell went that was it 100% effort no problem, mind if you didn't you got your face smashed in smile

When I run it's entirely variable, some nights I can feel all bouncy and off with an inner smile on me face. Others I have to drag my limbs over the first mile or so cursing my body for being so bloody inconsistent.

If I have a week off entirely and then go out, that's when I feel the best, no initial tiredness at all. Doing Wetherby 10k a week on sunday and intend to do nothing after Tues next week.
