A car from today, to buy my son in 18 years
Discussion
Hi guys
I have just had my first child, a little boy, some 3 months ago. I carried him into the garage so I could grab something earlier and my mind started wandering. When he turns 18, assuming the world of insurance has ousted the crash for cash merchants and classic insurance is available, what car will I be helping him to find as his first car in 18 years time?
So, what car would you buy, that must be available as a retail option TODAY, for your off spring in 18 years time. When you buy the car it'll have to be a used example of course, so take into account 18 years of use/ abuse between now and then.
My mind keeps settling onto a defender, (I'm biased as I own a 21 year old example myself!). Seems to me about the only car that might still be cool in 18 years, like series landy's are now.
Any others?

In 18 years, the internal combustion engine will have been outlawed... Your lad's gonna be stuck with a classic Nissan Leaf, or Tesla Roadster...

Nah, they'll be using non-combustion engine technology, but they'll harp back to design classics to clothe it in, like in the film Gattaca that had electric DS Convertibles and Studebaker Avantis.

Hopefully.

What if he decides he wants to grow up and hug tree's?

Noooooooo. It won't happen, I was explaining all the various parts of the landy's engine to him yesterday, start him early. Sadly, the wife interjected and reminded him that the bonnet for the landy is still on the floor "cos the bloody thing isn't capable of moving, again", so I'm fighting a battle to keep him on the true petrol head route.
I wasn't thinking of buying something now and hiding it away! More thinking what of today's models will last that 18 years and then still be working during his ownership.
I've seen nothing to beat a current model 'fender yet (assuming at least some survive the rusting process over the next 18 years)

What a good question. I will be in a similar position in a little under 4 months, and am sat here scratching my head. I can't come up with anything reasonably sensible that will still be around in 18 years time after 18 years of abuse. There are very few cars I can see lasting that long, let alone ones at the lower end.I have just had my first child, a little boy, some 3 months ago. At a push I'd suggest a Panda, maybe a 100hp. He should be able to insure it in 18 years time, and they look like tough little things to survive the interim.
Well, seeing as we still have no budget to stick to, how about a Veyron? Or a One-77? Think he might be converted if you could pull that off. Ignore those who say only electric cars will be around by then. I will slaughter my first born if most of us aren't still driving around using engines that make small bits of very old animals go bang.

There is no budget, because how the hell do I predict what a veyron, defender or Panda will cost in 18 years time?
Am I the only one understanding the op, or have a missed something, cos the op seems to suggest buying the car IN 18 years time, not buying a brand new example off the shelf today and keeping it for 18 years.
In which case, I wouldn't want to bet on what cars on the show room floor today will still be working and reliable in 18 years.
But if I HAD to choose something, then it would probably be an MX5, as there will probably be a large enough choice to find a good example and plenty of spares to keep it on the road.
