Sounds interesting.....

The Ultra wide lens is appealing.

Hmmm, very interesting...

I was (literally picking up the phone) just about to place my D70 order when I happened across your post Ed! Thanks!

Got me thinking...

* What do people reckon a probable release date would be here (assuming it's Sept/Oct in the States)?

* Would the price be about dollar equivalent (ie $1300 vs £1300)?

* Do you reckon the D70 price will drop as the 300D did when the D70 came out (so I am told)?

The 20D seems to fix most of the things that swayed my decision to the D70 over the 300D (fast start up, fps, feel etc). I can't say the 8Mp makes a great deal of difference to me (unless I start making duvet covers out of my pics... )

I realise that any answers will be mostly conjecture but I'm interested to hear peoples opinions.

Cheers,
Phil.

But of course in six months time Nikon will launch a D80... you have to jump on somewhere. At least the competition is making DSLR prices more affordable to folk like you and I. As a model ages, the price will drop as rivals come out: you have to weigh up price versus the thrill of getting the latest model. As it stands the 20D seems to be £300 more than the D70, and if that price is body-only, it's £500 more. Is 8.2Mp and 5fps worth £3-500 extra? You could get a nice lens or two for that...

Very true... I think that my mind has been made up with regards the camera I am going to get (the D70). It's just a case now of when (plus when the cheapest places get stock in!). The cheapest I've found it (D70 18-70mm) is £879 here by they are out of stock at the moment. I'm just wondering whether it is worth waiting a couple of months to see the price is affected (downwards!)

That's a very good price. I can't see it going lower than that for a while. But of course for every month you wait, that's a month you don't have it and can't use it...

Difficult to say when the 20D will be available, and for how much. The 1D II is still in short supply 6 months on from it's launch, so either Canon have got huge quantities of these ready to ship in a month, or you may be waiting until Spring 2005 to get hold of one.

I think $=£ is a reasonable assumption, although may be worth giving someone like Park Cameras a call to see if they've got any ideas about this. I'm sure that they'll put you on a wait list for one if you are interested.

Are Nikon due to bring out another model soon? Not aware of this, whereas rumours of Canon's new bodies have been bouncing around the net for months.

It's difficult to say how good the 20D is compared to the D70 until people get their hands on them, but if you can hold off for a few weeks it may well be worth the wait to see a) how good the new Canon actually is, and b) what Nikon do in response.

Unlikely I think, but the D70 has left the D100 looking a bit uncomfortable so that will be the next to be phased out I think. They've left plenty of room in the numbering for a D80 and D90 as per their F-Models.

Double

Stocks appear to be low at most places at the moment so I may wait a short while, but I do totally agree with your sentiments.

This is not like me at all to have such patience... must be the unfolding cost a looming wedding that's making me jittery! "Do our guests really have to eat dear? Packed lunch an option maybe?"

Marry the D70 instead: sorted And it won't throw a tantrum (or if it does you can press reset)

Likewise

Just found this where they are discussing the 20D price. A guy in Japan has ordered his for collection on the 18/09 for about £900. Others are saying the UK price will be between £1100 and £1500.

I have placed an order for a 20D from Park Cameras, not sure on the exact price yet but it'll be slightly less than £1280.

Anyone wanna buy a slightly used Eos 10D. That is one nice camera but I can't really justify swapping mine for another one just yet. I've not had the 10d two minutes yet and already they've tempted me to buy another.

Oh well, better get some more overtime done at work to pay for the bloomin' thing I suppose.
