I have just really bought a 2.4 convertible on 95k and it has just making a rattle from the engine. I took it to a few garages to look at and non of them couldnt really tell me where the noise was coming from. In the end I went with a Audi specialist who said they could not figure out where the noise was going and suggested a oil chage which he did. After this he said he was pretty sure it was the timing chain tensioners this has really started to worry me.

He said it would cost around £1400 to fix and this has worried me. The noise is really not that bad I didnt know it was there until i took it to Audi for a health check.

I will be driving around 6000 miles a year what will happen will it get louder or bring up a fault code before something goes really wrong any advice would be really helpful.

Would it be worth taking warrenty out I have been quoted £300 a year.

This is driving me mad any help will be great.

I'm guessing you have an A4 Cab, and in which case I'm 99% sure these all used a timing belt (which at 95k should have been replaced but that's an aside!). I believe there are short timing chains joining the cams together (one on each bank of the vee). If they are causing the noise they would have to be pretty loose, and this would be easy to check with the cam covers off. It seems a little strange that £1400 has been quoted without a bit of time being spent carrying out physical checks (incidentally that figure sounds pretty steep as well!). Also, it's unlikely that both chains would have worn out evenly (if at all) so I would expect the rattle to be much more pronounced on one side of the engine than the other. Definately worth seeking another opinion before parting with large sums of money!
