Whats the story finding a 964 C2?
Discussion
Have been looking for a while for a 964 C2 with proper history, spec and failry straight forward colour combo but to no avail. Most ive seen have 160k miles, dont have cups, sports seats tear drop mirrors and very scant history at best. Im not saying one has to have all these build specs like mirrors for example but even with half of what im looking for either never comes up or if it does just vanishes!
I noticed on another post one car needing a full engine build at RPM sold for 22k so my question is have C2's become the new RS wannabe so they are tucked and what should i be looking to pay for one that has all that im after (or nearly all that im after)?? tks

The 964 went unloved for quite a while. However as less and less decent examples are now available , they have become quite a catch. So you are going to struggle to find a good one. Not to say they aren't there, but they do get snapped up very quickly.
They obviously make a good base , compared to the C4 , for a project and RS type upgrade.
Not going to go into the reason they went unloved, as I'm sure you have done your homework already. But they are now appreciated more probably for the driving experience , the noise etc etc. As more modern machinery evolves with not quite as much rawness and 911 traits, then the older models are steadily becoming something of a collectors piece.
Big mistake selling mine.

Tks, im assuminmg you had what im looking for as well!!! Personally id probably keep it very original but i can see why the C2's get RS'd.They obviously make a good base , compared to the C4 , for a project and RS type upgrade.

Ive raised the bar in terms of what i thought id have to spend on one..
OP, it sounds like your ideal spec 964C2 is going to cost you north of £20K and as you've found, it will sell pretty quick when it comes up. I would say don't be put off by the high milers which will cost you considerably less if they haven't had major work done. Just be prepared to have a big chunk of money to put into it straight away. The total price will end up the same as buying a 'mint' one but you'll know exactly where you are with it.
I know of a few that have recently done this i.e. snapped one up at a lowish price and put it straight in for an engine rebuild. My own C2 now has 180K on the clock but with a fresh engine, suspension and lots of other stuff it goes and drives as well as any 'mint' low mile example.

I would avoid being too fussy with mileage. The spec of wheels, mirrors or even seats isn't important as these can easily be changed is desired. Condition is paramount unless you are prepared to spend. This could be worth investigation?

well at 20 + then its probably slightly out of my budgetI know of a few that have recently done this i.e. snapped one up at a lowish price and put it straight in for an engine rebuild. They come up. I advertised mine on here a few months ago. It was up for about two months and no-one seemed very interested except a few dealers. I ended up selling it via a local website (Ireland) for c. Carrera 2 manual coupe | 87,000 miles | Rebuild & new clutch | Slate grey | Linen leather | Sport seats | Bilsteins | FULL history
It didn't have cup mirrors though

Buddy I had a c2 964 which was a good un. Nowadays it would most probs be over 20k to buy. I loved it, however for that money I'd sooner have the 993 with higher mileage I have now. IMO a better car, when prices for both are so similar.I noticed on another post one car needing a full engine build at RPM sold for 22k so my question is have C2's become the new RS wannabe so they are tucked and what should i be looking to pay for one that has all that im after (or nearly all that im after)?? tks
The problem is more rot now than engine troubles with a 964

Very true. Five years ago the only 964 rot that got mentioned was under the windscreen (same for the 993) but now there are a lot more issues and many cars having extensive body work repairs. Time has inevitably taken its toll on cars that get used regularly. However, I'll guess that time will also start taking its toll on 993s in a few more years and the 996 a few years after that. Age gets to us all in the end.

I had a Peter Morgan inspection on my C2 last week prior to collection and happy to report no rust atall.
Get an expert to check it out is the best method.

Simple answer to this. The 964 in the late spec. you are looking for (teardrop mirrors, cup wheels) were built from the 92MY on for only two years. The early 90's was a time of major recession and Porsche sales were on the floor, 911 global sales in 93 were <10,000. The '92 on cars also had design changes to the engine to prevent leaks, so its the one we all looked for. They also tend not to have the 80's hang-over interiors (linen with contrasting red piping anyone?), all of which add to their desirability.
Added to the recent surge in 964 prices generally, and I'd expect to pay mid £20s for a good late C2 with history and reasonable miles, and I've heard of these cars selling for near £30k.
You're better looking for a good car and not worry about year/specification, and BTW a C4 is just as satisfying to drive inspite of what 'they' tell you.

All sounds about right SS7.
Added to the fact that for years the 964 was just plain unwanted, no ifs, no buts.
The 993 was such an improvement that it made the 964 a cheap starter 911 that folks only wanted as it was an easy way into the marque.
I'm not saying it was undeserved but that's the facts, so added to all the reasons above you also have to consider that people used them as cheap snotters (like a 996 now perhaps?) which has thinned the market of even more "good" cars.
It's funny, as due to my age the 964 has always been the "one" for me but when I mention this at the local club meets you still get lots of desperaging remarks about them.
Then again I was another one of those buyers that ended up buying a 993 as it was just much easier finding a really nice one.

While the 993 may have been considered a significant improvement at the time, my opinion of them both now is that they offer a very similar driving experience.
Most of the better 964s should have had any leaks sorted by now. When I was a young fella the 959 and subsequently the 993 were my poster cars. When I became more interested in Porsches the 993 fell out of favour as the upright headlights of the 964 seemed more right to my eyes.
I'm not going to talk values up or down as I have just sold mine so neither topic appeals to me but all I will say is that they are great cars and are definitely worth the money, whatever that price might be

I should have added that as nice variorum 993s with sensible miles are now £35k its really pulled 964 prices up as people look for an air-cooled option without the old-skool 'charm's of the IB cars. Added to the fact that for years the 964 was just plain unwanted, no ifs, no buts.

Hang in there. I searched for ages and had planned to travel anywhere in the UK to get the right one. The one I bought had been in storage half a mile from my house!!!
