Modern Replicas - I'm genuinely interested in the motivation
Discussion
So, on the Badly modified cars thread there are many examples of modern replicas, generally MR2s and 406s attempting to look like Ferraris and Lambos.
Some examples:
F430
LP640
and just for the comedy of it this
I'm genuinely interested in if there's anyone here who has built or bought one of these modern replicas, I'm not talking about classics here, I can see the logic behind that.
So what drives you? Did you just want something a bit different? Did it start as a small mod and spiralled (though I'm not sure quite how that could happen)?
Or is there a group of people out there who make them thinking that they can make a pretty penny starting with a £2k base car and ultimately never sell them for anything close to what they hoped?
Has anyone actually seen one of these sell?

I remember seeing a "cops with cameras" style show a couple of years ago when they stopped a man driving an awful replica LP640.
As for the guy driving it; he seemed to be a bald headed, gold chain wearing, steroid munching imbercile if I remember correctly. (Could be a tad unfair). Hopefully that gives you an insite.

The thing that I don't understand is why would you want to spend £12,500 on something like that when you can get a E46 M3 in reasonable order for that which will out perform it.
Absolutely silly stuff going on here.
Because an E46 M3 will not give people with impaired eyesight the impression that you are very much richer than you are.Absolutely silly stuff going on here.
I once saw a Ford Cougar turned into an F430 replica in a kit car magazine, it even had a plastic tray that looked like the top of the Ferrari's engine but you had to put the rear seats down to fit it (obviously lowering the CoG at the same time
). I've never understood the reason for them either.
). I've never understood the reason for them either. I used to know a guy with a replica 328 Ferrari based on a Fiero and it was bloody good! Had me and another (very) petrolhead mate fooled for a minute or two. Only the dashboard looked wrong and it was a quick look at the tax disc that finally gave it away.
At a classic car show (Powderham) it was parked behind a genuine one and to be honest, the detailing on the fake was far superior, most people thought the other one (the realone) was a fake!
Remember him selling it for loads of money (20 grandish).

The f430 isn't too horrendous...for a rep!
Agreed, i tried to find some half decent ones to make the point... but still, would you own it?Surely someone must know someone who has bought one?
I bet it's cheaper to run/insure (and obviously acquire/build) for the person who has it so I see no issue in them owning it if it's a dream car, but they'll never get the real deal.
I think the people on PH need to get down off that there high horse IMHO...
The 406 is a pile of s
t - it's like no effort's gone into it. That's the difference IMHO
I would be hugely embarrassed to be seen in any of them, or even that MX5 based Elise replica kit. Surely cars are for driving, and if it doesn't drive like the thing you want it to be then why bother with making it look like it?
I have a model 288GTO at home which gives me all of the pleasure of looking at the car, but without any of the expense of pointlessly ruining a perfectly good MR2 (or whatever) for the same effect. The only advantage of building a replica is that other people might think you have the real thing, and I'd hate to give people a false impression. It's like wearing a wig, I'd rather be bald*.
Maybe I'm just not vain enough to drive one. I dunno.

I think this has to be the best one I've seen recently:

At least his pretend supercar had the engine in more or less the right place. There's a special circle of hell reserved for people who buy those Peugeot 406-based Ferrari 360 replicas!
