944 weight saving
Discussion
Anyone got any ideas of what i can remove from a bog standard 944 s2 to reduce the weight for trackdays. And will it be noticeable?
Don't want to go mad and strip it as it will need to be put back for daily use.
I was thinking spare wheel? rear seat? but how much do these weigh?
What about the front seats? If i got some lighter ones without all the electrics are there any that mount on the same rails as the standard ones?
Cheers

The inside of a 944 is quite a weighty thing. Even the rear seat back is around 15kg. So yes moderate reductions can be made by taking out just the stuff you can easily put back in again. The front seats are very heavy and so yes you will make a big difference by putting some lightweight ones in.
Next is stuff like air con I guess, but that all gets a bit permenant. Even if you just change the seats I think you will undecut the mighty 968 CS weightwise

Before spending too much time and effort just consider what benefit you will actually gain.
My own 82Lux 2.7 (yes really!) feels no different with or without a passenger. As this is something like a a 60 - 70kg difference I doubt you will see anything tangible on the track for just removing ancillaries.
Having said that removing the rear seat makes a huge difference to the carrying capacity and is worthwhile just for that.
One of the biggest single items you could change would be a perspex rear hatch that will save something like 35kg.

As with all weight saving you have to look at getting a little of as many items as you can.
I would say if you are tracking the car then strip as much out as possable, as you will put lees pressure on brakes, tyres etc. The car WILL go faster.
If you take out all the seat and replace with 1 race chair you can save about 60kg, spare wheel is about 22kg, tools/jack 10kg.
To make a significant difference requires taking out about 100kgs of stuff.
The perspex rear hatch aint cheap but its a usefull saving, air con delete, leccy window delete, lightweight wheels etc etc..

There's an American drag racing icon called "Sneaky Pete Robinson" who won a lot of races with his 427 Ford SOHC "Cammer" back in the 1960's before departing this earth in an accident.
He was very innovative.
One day he was seen using a hack saw on the corner of an engine block, whacking off a section of unnecessary iron. A guy asked him, "why are you doing that, that little piece of metal won't make any difference".
Sneaky kept sawing until the lump fell off and hit the ground. He then picked it up and handed it to the guy and said........"now, throw that a quarter mile".
Weight reduction most certainly equates to horsepower, and it's probably easier to reduce the weight of a S2 than to increase the horsepower rating.
