I've taken the plunge...

Angel Tuning are paying me a visit to remap the 159 (1.9tdi), deleting the EGR at the same time (will be keeping the DPF, though, as I am still unsure about the future of these - can always remove later).

The hopes are to increase BHP by circa 45, and torque by 65, and potentially lower 0-60 from 9.3 to 7.8. And maaaaybe improve MPG, which currently averages 36 according to the trip computer.

Will let you know how I get on.

IMHO don't be too greedy on the power and torque, as clutches etc get a pasting. I am a Fan of Angel though. My GT was done by them and was brilliant. Just a gentle map about +15% but the difference in drivability was enormous.

An old colleague had a Stilo with the 1.9 JTD lump remapped by them. Very impressive results..

I'm thinking of having this done in the new year to my 156 when I've got a bit of spare cash, but I'm going to have the DPF removed too. Can I be a bit cheeky and ask how much you've been quoted for the work so I know how much I need to save smile

Let us know how you get on though.

No probs.

The remap inc EGR delete is £285.00 all in, with them coming to my premises.

I think it was around £450.00 inc DPF removal, but I would need to go to their premises for a morning, which I cannot do at the mo. They said they could do the DPF removal at a later date, circa £250.00 quid.

The bloke should be here in 15 mins... can't wait!

That's not a bad price at all. I've been reading up on Alfa owner and there are all sorts of figures being thrown around for various remaps inlcuding EGR delete and DPF removal from £350 from Motormech in Birmingham to £700 for the places that use the Alfatune remap.

I really cant decide which one to go for. I would however be able to go down to Angel tuning for the day if I did use them.

Tom from Angel has just been. Very clued up bloke. He wrote the software in question, and has owned a 159 to boot, so he was really on the ball with advice etc. He actually told me not to delete the EGR if the DPF was staying on; he explained that as the EGR sends some the gasses back through the motor for a second burn, it takes out some of the soot that would build up on the DPF. If you were to delete the EGR, all the crap would go straight to the DPF, and could block it very quickly - perhaps causing a failure within 1000 miles. I like this sort of honest advice.

Car pulls very nicely in second and third now, and should get better as the car adapts to my driving, I have been told.

I will report back with more lengthy findings soon, but early signs look good. Not earth shattering, but I haven't had the full works done, mind.

Hmm not sure I agree with that at all. EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is on the car primarily to control NOx emissions. EGR increases soot emissions (it's the inevitable NOx : Soot trade-off), consider it this way, when using EGR you are replacing air in the cylinder with diluent exhaust gas - the Air:Fuel Ratio is therefore lower and this increases soot. Emissions control strategies for Euro V have moved to using a DPF to trap soot to ultra low levels and tyen use EGR to minimise NOx. When using EGR to control NOx, the increase in soot must be controlled with a DPF. Also NOx does have an ability to regenerate DPFs, in particular passive oxidation of soot with NO. So actually higher NOx levels with deletion of EGR would help the DPF regenerate at lower temperatures. It's a good thing. The only negative is tgat the NOx levels emitted from the exhaust will be higher.

Think your chap from Angel has got a bit confused!

I have an Angel upgrade on my 2.4JTDM Brera, it's a good upgrade, but don't believe everything they tell you. Power increases probably come from a bit of injection advance (hence the improved fuel consumption, coupled primarily with full load increased fuelling). :-)

They are my specialist of choice I had a service there a few weeks back and had the EGR removed and blanked! Had a bizzare issue which was sorted by this, I'd have a remap if the car hadn't cost a fortune to keep running now it just had to survive till its two year anniversary ... The dual mass flywheel is now on its way out frown

Dont know if my clutch would handle it (100k on clock) I am probably worring about nothing! I dont have spare cash at the moment as I am selling house and looking to move nearer to london which is costing me a fortune coming from somerset to london prices!
