Your son rings you and tells you.......

He put his Audi A6 in for a cambelt and water pump change only to get a call to say...'Sorry to have to tell you this sir, but on the test drive after the change the new water pump seized, the cambelt jumped some teeth and we have damaged the engine....'

Water pump manufacturer is ( allegedly) coverng the costs to remove the head, any remanufacturing costs, any new valves etc etc...basically all the costs to get it right. I say allegedly because I find it strange any company would underwrite all of the costs before the heads even been taken off, call me a cynic but it doesn't feel right.

The bill wouldn't be passed on for this work as they have already admitted liability between the garage and supplier, so getting it in writing isn't that important in cases like this. One call to trading standards would put an end to any argument. This does happen quite frequently and if the supplier argues the bill then the garage are extremely unlikely to try and pass on the bill as they have already told you it's happened in their care after they have fitted new parts. And as for selling quickly, why ?

I really do not understand this mindset.

The cambelt fails so the engine needs a rebuild. Surely the engine will be in BETTER condition than when it arrived at the garage with (for arguments sake) 100k on the valves/head which wouldn't normally have been touched when the belt/pump were changed.

My understanding is the OP potentially will get a rebuilt head, cambelt and waterpump - and not pay for the whole lot, so why is that bad?

The OP is a good reason not to supply the garage with your own parts as well smile

Did you see this phrase?

"we have damaged the engine."

So do you think that they'll check and fix everything correctly?

The cambelt slipping a couple of teeth has the potential to cause a lot of damage!

Also engines are built in nice dedicated factories that do nothing else, whereas you local dealer very rarely builds engines. Whether they rebuild it to factory standards is up to the skill, experience and dedication of the chap doing the work.

The garage will get the head reconditioned / repaired and make sure the bottom end is in good order. The vehicle will come back running perfectly and with a guarantee of the work done so you wont have any worries there. I do think the general petrolhead public have a paranoid view of work carried out by professionals ... And rightly so in some cases but give the garage a break in this instance. They have admitted liability and are putting things right so let them get on with it and see what the outcome is ?
