Brake caliper, Westfield XTR2
Discussion
Does anyone know what rear brake caliper is fitted to a Westfield XTR2.
The caliper is marked Lucus but none of the cast or etched part numbers come up in Google.
The caliper includes the handbrake mechanism. All parts are new so I'm assuming are not seized.
If someone knows the beast perhaps they can tell me how the mechanism adjusts? I've tried pressing the foot brake, Pressing the brake and then pulling on the lever. Nothing seems to work.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Daniel
It's not quite the same as any of those.
However I suspect they all operate the same way so back to the question.
The main brakes work fine but the handbrake has excess travel so failed its IVA test.
If I adjust the cables I get to a point where the travel is passable but the brakes are now binding. What I can't work out is how the ratchet system in the caliper works as that may be the issue. I'm also considering that the brake lever may itself not have a long enough actuating arm to suit the caliper.

Thanks for your help
Steve
PS I've nearly completed your fuel system drawings.

Hello again Stave,
It looks very similar to a Lucas caliper used by Audis:

I look forward to seeing the fuel system drawing.

I would be surprised if they had a ratchet system built in (is that for taking up stretch on the cables and wear on the pads?). A lever matched to the pedal travel would be another option, as you said.
Here's another supplier: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caliper-1995-2000-1996-200...

The caliper does have the type of piston that you have to wind back in using a special tool when you come to fit new pads. There will be a thread inside the piston so that pad wear is taken up allowing the handbrake to still operate.
In order to understand how I solve the problem I still need to know if this style caliper adjust themselves by way of the pedal action or the action of the handbrake.

That looks pretty similar to the caliper fitted to the rear of my GF's Golf.
I'm not 100% as I have not had the rear brakes off yet (not had to - makes a change from having to do master cylinders every year on an XR2
)
If it helps I can do a quick summary of adjustment from Haynes manual.
1. Check adjustment - Apply footbrake firmly several times to establish correct pad-to-disc clearance, then apply and release handbrake several times.
Fully apply handbrake counting the clicks (4-7).
2. Adjust - With the handbrake fully released, slaken the handbrake adjuster nut until both the rear CALIPER handbrake levers are back against their stops.
From this point, tighten the adjusting nuts (on each caliper) until both CALIPER handbrake levers just move off their stops. The gap between lever and stop 1.0mm to 1.5mm.
3. Check -Fully apply handbrake - count clicks - adjust handbrake adjuster nut if needed (the one at the handbrake lever).
I hope that may be of some use to you.
