My car caught on fire today

Recently I bought a 1975 Jensen-Healey (yes, I was asking for trouble...) I was having rather a lot of fun with it until today... When I started it was running very roughly. I got it out of my garage (thank god) and about 50m down the street. It was then I noticed an acrid burning smell and copious amounts of smoke emanating from under the bonnet.
I quickly (understatement) exited the vehicle and called the fire brigade. At about this time flames began licking the bonnet. Amusingly (with hindsight) this all happened right outside a local bar (friday after work drinks). The spectacle drew quite a crowd. Someone kindly grabbed an extinguisher from inside and did their best.
The fire brigade responded quickly and doused my smouldering wreck. At least I was insured...

God, that's awful when that happens. Only had it once on the TVR when the Webers spat back and it erupted into flames, but we acted quickly to smother it and somebody stopped with a fire extinguisher. We were lucky not too much damage, only the carbs really.
At least you're OK and it'll probably get fixed on the insurance.

same thing happened to me in my 2.8tdi frontera, whole front end went up and destroyed the engine in about 5 minutes!!no idea what caused it but was quite frightening as it happened in the middle of a housing estate. tip from firebrigade - if you can just undo the bonnet from inside the car, don't open it, they can then get in to the engine bay to put the flames out.

Some kind of fuel leak was the culprit. The fire seemed to be most intense around the air box. I'm pretty sure the insurance company will elect to repair it so hopefully it will live to fight another day. It had a few stone chips on the bonnet anyway...
