We reckon that a middle-aged mate's ADHD is confirmed by the fact that she is the only person we know who, when she takes speed, slows down. Seriously.
I know a couple of people on ADHD meds as adults who have had huge, dramatic, life-changing improvements as a result - one found himself able to actually properly learn and concentrate for the first time in his life aged 23, took GCSEs then A levels (had been expelled from school at 14), now at uni... I don't think there are that many people who'd really benefit from the meds as adults but for those few, being on them is a massive big deal and very much worth finding out/checking if you suspect this may be the case, 'cos if you're right, it could change everything.

Read a few articles about this. Omega 3 fish oil(a crazy dose of about 3000mg+) and a very carbohydrate, low GI diet, NO alcohol and absolutely, unequivocally no caffeine or refined carbs. Also high levels of exercise, high intensity to control it.
Good luck with it, but if it's any solace a friend who's a psychologist argues that the "ADHD" personality types are innovators and anthropologically were the adventurers/explorers who were fundamental to the survival of the species.
