Rattling roof lining?
Discussion
Hello All
Having owned a 2007 Cooper since February, I’ve slowly spent the last few months tracing and eliminating a few squeaks and rattles.
Now I’m aware that the suspension is firm, and that at present it has runflat tyres, however, there is a noise (like a constant tapping sound) coming from both sides of the roof, level with my head, where the door seal meets the roof lining. (I did think at first that it was a sunroof rattle, but this doesn’t appear to be the case).
I’ve sat in both the driver and passenger seats while moving, and if I press the roof lining upwards where it meets the door seal, the noise seems to stop.
Does anyone have any experience of something similar, and short of having the roof lining taken down and refitted, any ideas of possibly how to cure it?
Its driving me mad!!
Many thanks.

Yep, mine does it. R53, but I'd bet the lining is very similar. I undid all the fixtures & fittings, handles & vidors etc. to get the lining out. It's fairly straightforward, about 30 minutes with a screwdriver.
What you find is the other side of the lining is cardboard backing & it vibrates againt the metal roof skin, especially where the wires for the courtesy lights run. I laid a big patch of fleece material over the lining, screwed it all back together & job jobbed.

Many thanks for the reply - its a great help. I've started by removing the door seal and trying to pad out the gap between the roof lining and the roof itself with some material - initial impression seems ok but will be going on a long run tomorrow so will have a better idea.
Will try and avoid taking the whole roof lining down if possible, but at least I know it can be cured!
Thanks again.
