MPEG-1 Brief Description: MPEG-1 was the Experts first attempt at making a standard by which audio and video could be shared on a compact disk. This multi-layered format was finalized in 1992, and allows audio and video to be transferred at bitrates of approx 1.5 megabits per second (same rate as a single speed CD-ROM drive). This equates to near VHS-quality video and subpar quality audio (MP3's). MPEG-1 is typically used in applications such as CD-ROMs and Video CDs and nowadays MP3 CDs, where high levels of quality are compromised in order to save space. An interesting fact is that MP3's are actually the third layer, or part, of the MPEG-1 standard.

MPEG-2 was finalized in 1996, and was a substantial improvement over MPEG-1. Videos compressed using MPEG-2 can deliver extremely high quality videos and full CD-quality sound. This is why modern video delivery mediums, like digital satellites systems and DVDs, use the MPEG-2 standard.
