The fuel pump packed in the other day, bought a new one and fitted it. I can now hear the pump priming, but the car will not start. Has any one got any ideas? any help would be hugely appreciated

OK its turning over, next thing to check is a spark, take a plug out and check the condition of it, then see if there is a spark when you crank it over, you may need some help with this, watch out the coil puts out a very high voltage,if you have a spark then you need fuel, I would prime the pump and then turn off the ignition, then on the fuel rail there should be a small valve like a tyre valve, push it in and you should get petrol out ( under pressure so be prepared for it with some rags ).
See how you go and let us know how you get on.

Right I have had a look at the fuel rail and I dont seem to have a valve on it. It seems to me the car is not getting fuel. Im wondering if when the pump packed up maybe it pushed some crud through which blocked the fuel filter. I know it is something simple but it has had me puzzled for a week now, what makes it worse is I have been with out the car for 4 months and it has come back to a new garage which I have been excited about but I cant use her. On the plus side at least I have some where dry and warm with lights to work now instead of on the drive. thanks in advance

OK the early cars may not have a bleed point, you could take off the hose going to the fuel rail and check that you have pressure and fuel, same rule applies there may be high pressures in the line.may be worth letting it stand for a while to let the pressure drop, removing the hose and pointing it into a container say a petrol can, then turn the ignition on and see if you get a flow.

I had a similar problem to this and it turned out to be part of the imobilliser that was the problem.
This works on 3 or 4 different parts of the engine system and my mechanic traced it to I think the petrol pump and bypassed it. I will ask and confirm tomorrow.

Do not think it should need priming if it has a full tank sat above it, did you take off the fuel hose in the engine bay?, just because you fitted a new pump it still may be faulty, may be worth taking the hose off the pump discharge to filter and checking you are getting a flow from the pump.

Was this some sort of attempt to improve economy. As you drive fuel gets pumped back into the tank smile

But you did figure it out so well done. Plus a bit more knowledge in the knowledge-bank that you might be able to pass on to someone else in the future.
