Citroën CX what do we think?

Still old shed territory or have they gone through being hopeless old heaps and come back out the other side to the point of being uber cool family wagons?
And to ask another question - any pitfalls to look for (suspension woes don't scare me - it's actually not 'that' complicated)?

Very much 'on the turn' in my view, the main challenge is trying to find one. Unlike the DS, they didn't become a classic in their own life time and, thus, numbers have been decimated in the 23 years that they've been out of production.
Crumbling trim, schlonky electronics and the very crude engines are the main downsides to these awesome beasts.

Feeling a bit sour then?
My pal had a CX GTi Turbo and got fed up with paying for the tyres so he let his wife turn it in for a C3!
He also inherited his father-in-law's CX Prestige that he left in his barn and it took rats just months to eat the interior. Sold it for 50€.

Bound to increase markedly in value in the very near future as I sold mine last year & that's what happens every time
They are incredibly cool, particularly the seven seat Familiale or the early ones with the mental dash!
Word of advice to all..........if you want to know what will be the next 'boom' car just find out what I've sold the year before

Super cars but I'm not sure if it would be up to full on modern family duties.
That said if you're handy with a spanner (and the LHM) then it would be great fun.
At a rally in France last year an elderly French couple rocked up in a CX Turbo 2 Prestige complete with front studded tyres. They drove it full throttle or full brake for 1500km without a hitch.

I've had a few, all Safari/Famillies. The best was for me was the 2.4 injected, but thirsty .... I had a series one diesel, than I bought a 180k, and later sold at 425k. They have gone up in value in France.
Rust is your enemy, and the Metric sized tyres on the fast ones ..... but I have never had a car since that was as comfortable.

The CX is so much better than the rather overrated DS. Don't get me wrong, the DS was an amazing bit of kit but they're not sleek and elegant in the way an early metal bumper CX is. They've also become very expensive (more than an SM FFS!) and a bit of a lefty/Guardian/roll neck sweater chariot. The CX is undoubtedly a more informed choice. A Prestige or a 2400 GTi would be ideal but let's face it, even a basic 2000 Pallas would be fine. Robert Opron's finest hour imho, but seventies Citroens make me moist as long as they have at least four cylinders.

I went to school with a kid called Adam Braun-Meek who's dad had an early (1976 R Reg) CX in exactly that spec. It had an electric webasto sunroof which was just AWESOME!CX Safari, black with privacy windows and stainless disc wheel trims.
Fantastic cars, we had two. A 1976 CX2200 Pallas, seen here picnicing at the side of the road in France in the early eighties. Unfortunately it rotted away, but I still sold it for £1000 cash (£200 more than I paid for it) to a Nigerian gentlemen with only a provisional license.

In my experience, (series 1 2 litre petrol, 2.4 petrol, diesel turbo and a series 2 diesel turbo......I had a few French niggles, but not as many as the XM which replaced it .... or my Wife's C5 which we still have.
The diesel turbo 2's had a well documented porous block problem.....
Not many for sale though !
