First Car? - Repost
Discussion
Hello everyone, again.
My original post for this is here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and I hope you guys won't mind me reposting, as frankly, the original was getting too long, and as I wouldn't be bothered to read the whole lot through, I shouldn't expect you to!
Right, to cut a long story short, I have now received my provisional driving license, and Dad is now seriously considering cars (it's got to the 'we'll go have a look at it' point.)
Since I could remember, the two ambitions I had in life was to become a vet (irrelevant, but for the record, so far so good), and to have a Series 3 Landrover (Dad had one when I was small, and I loved it).
I have always been adamant that I was going to own a S3, and I've found two lovely specimens:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C323773
As you can see, one is quite a bit more expensive than the other!
I previously said my budget was £6000 - that's now been significantly reduced to around £3500 haha!
Anyway, to the point:
Landrover S3? the MGB Roadster or MG Midget? or something more modern?
I am pretty picky about modern cars - I'm just like that. For example, no old Nissan Micras, Ford Fiestas, you know xD (no offence meant, I'm just weird.)
Dad is all for the S3 or the MGs, however, Mum, who has a large influence over Dad, seems to be trying to convince him to talk me out of it. She seems to have got her way today.
I've found a rather lovely Ford SteetKa which we are probably looking at tomorrow:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
It's a bit of a contrast from the loveable Landy, but it's cute!
It also, as with the MGs, begs the question - would a two-seater be a bad idea?
As insurance goes, I went on GoCompare, using my Dad's name and me as the additional driver. I also gave it the impression that I had a full license - there's no point having a car on provisional when you suddenly can't afford it when you past the test.
So, the results:
Landrover Series 3 - £134 a month
MGB Roadster - £134 a month
MG Midget - £70 a month
Nissan Juke - £126 a month (too expensive to buy, but hey)
VW Beetle Convertible - £126 a month
Ford StreetKA - £145 a month
Ford Ka - £93 a month
Obviously, these are only based on one car, so they could all change.
[EDIT]^^ I'll leave that bit there, but I've now learnt that putting it in Dad's name is illegal, which is slightly awkward. Being naive is a winner![END EDIT]
[EDIT2]Just done another quote on the Ford StreetKa with me as the main driver and Dad as an additional driver - it's gone up from £145 to £245. Great. [/END EDIT]
[EDIT3]Same thing as edit 2 only with the Landy - me being the main driver made no difference at all - exactly the same price. Yay! [END EDIT]
So, thoughts? Sorry about the talking, hopefully it had some meaning/sense in it, and you haven't died of boredom!

I think the landy would be a great idea, given your chosen career path. However fronting on the insurance is a terrible idea.
To get a cheap and legal quote, put yourself as the main driver, and find 2 middle aged women with at least 5 years NCB and no points.
Also I found I was getting cheaper quotes on confused, for virtually any vehicle, and that paying in 1 lump sum saved around 20%.
ETA
utting your father on may, or may not help your quote, my father has 25 ( although I think confused, and go compare only ask up to 5 or more) years NCB, and has never had points, but still added £100 to the insurance
Hope this helps.
Looking again at the post, I may have jumped to conclusions, if he is the main driver, then it isn't fronting, but if it will be your car, and you will be the main driver, don't risk having your insurance voided. Will you earn any NCB as a named driver?

I've recently passed myself and have been driving around a boring 2005 fiesta as I got an excellent insurance quote on it. So as a new driver who has been experiencing his first car I can tell you this...
I am now seriously pining after a 2 seater! An MR2 to be precise.
So I don't think you will regret a 2 seater. In fact, you will save money on fuel, save time, and save stress.
That's just the opinion of a new driver struggling to sell his car to buy something sportier that he has always wanted.
You're young and care free, get it while you can!! (The 2 seater that is lol)

That's my opinion on the Landy - my Mum's opinion is that they're unreliable and thirsty. The fuel cost doesn't really worry me, as I won't be going far or going out very often, and the unreliability, I'm not sure about - I've heard that Landies are very reliable! To get a cheap and legal quote, put yourself as the main driver, and find 2 middle aged women with at least 5 years NCB and no points.

It shows how much I know when I had to look up the term 'fronting' - no idea that was illegal! -runs off to redo insurance quotes- I'll see how much it's affected.
I have in fact been doing the quotes on Confused.com.. I have no idea why I said GoCompare, the TV advert was probably on or something.
You did help a lot. Thanks!

Haha, that's the thing - I don't want my first car to be something I don't like just because it's cheap. The ideal would be my Landy, but a StreetKa would be fun too! Convertibles make all the difference in my opinion!I am now seriously pining after a 2 seater! An MR2 to be precise.

In regard to your edit, it will be my car, essentially. And with the NCB, I really don't know! I really should research, and don't remember seeing a question on it in the quote as I did when entering Dad's details. I'll have to do another quote with me as the main driver. I'll post quote...
RE insurance, you can however put named drivers on your policy, which will have just as much of an effect as if you were fronting. For example, I was quoted £2200 on a 106GTi with just me on the policy. This came down to £1600 when I added my step-dad who drives HGV's for a living and has 10+years NCB. Not a bad little saving at all.
Add a named driver with NCB and experience.
p.s. SportKA's are actually quite nice, probably the one to have if any!

You can't be bothered to read through all of the recommendations last time, but expect people to take the time to make more? Cheeky bint!
And no, I didn't bother to read any further than the first paragraph of your post.
Oioi, is someone making assumptions? I have read through the recommendations, as you would see if you read it - I have replied to all. My point is - you'll have to take my word on that, as I can't see you wanting to read all through the original. This being my original point made --> hence the repost. And no, I didn't bother to read any further than the first paragraph of your post.
Furthermore, as you can see on this repost, circumstances, such as budget, have changed.

Thank you very much for your help! I'll do that. And yep, I'm very much liking the leather seats! Add a named driver with NCB and experience.

On the two seat thing in the OP, don't do it. One of the joys of your first car is going out with mates and that sorta dies if you only have two seats. Some of the best times I've had in my car are when it's been four or five up (the latter is a struggle in a 50hp fiesta though)
On the other hand, it's an excuse not to give lifts and a reason to just go with that girl you like and not with her attachable mates.
Your choice really

I agree with you entirely - that's precisely what I'm worried about! If I have a two-seater... it's limited - if I have a larger car - there's the risk of becoming taxi. On the other hand, it's an excuse not to give lifts and a reason to just go with that girl you like and not with her attachable mates.

Say from the outlay that you expect them to front some money for petrol. You can then make some money and essentially have free petrol. I used to give lifts to my mates all the time because it ended up paying for my college commute haha. Play it right and you'll be fine.
Non petrolheads have no clue on how much motoring costs either.

Yeah, the taxi thing can happen, but only if you let it happen.
I'm more than happy to ferry my friends around. Partly down to the fact it means I can show off
but also because I'm nice like that. If its actually going out of my way, I'l ask them for petrol money.
I regurlarly pick my mate up from nandos at 2am. In return I get chicken. Bi-Winning.

Hi everyone,
So, just thought i'd tell you the good news! November last year I became the owner of Smartie, the Ford Streetka! I have also booked my driving test for late Feb 2013, so wish me luck!
As for Smartie, I absolutely love driving him, and looking forward to summers with the roof down!
Here's a couple of pictures:
