New airport in Berks (Twyford) or Oxon (Banbury)

There have been a few reports over the weekend that the government are looking in to the feasibility of building a new airport to replace Heathrow out in Berks/Oxon. According to the reports the Berks site is 'flat ground near Twyford'.

Banbury is the Oxfordshire site as it's near HS2 - a long way from London, but better for the rest of the country.

I estimate that if Twyford is built with SW/NE runways running parallel-ish to the M4 that we will be under the flight paths

It's fine as it says that it must be within 30mins of London. Most days that I try, it take me fking hours to get in and out of town.

Has the road links the railway links, airport already there, plenty of room to expand, surprised it has never happened in the past,

There's a huge open flat area between Waltham St. L and Twyford that the train line goes across. Would this be the area in question?

They must be joking - Heathrow is too far from London as it is. Gawd knows how much a taxi to central London is. Express is about £15 one way, and tube takes forever. Handy for Ascot tho..

Which is why it will probably never happen in Berks - the campaign that could be mobilised against it would have some serious backing.

Banbury on the other hand - pffff, let them have it

I don't see that it's proximity to London makes that much difference. It would be a main hub for the whole of UK, not just for London. A main line rail link into London would be fine, it's the rail & motorway links to the rest of the country that I'd see as more important.

between the a287 and a323 there Is plenty Of land to expand what is already a large site, I bet tag aviation would be up for more flights as they already keep pushing for more and more, then you have all the old aldershot barracks that are earmarked for housing some 20,000 homes easily changed to airport prioritys
And a bit of compulsory purchase were required if at all, is it really to small to develop ? Looks big enough to me on google earth plenty of room, but do I want it on my doorstep that's another story.

I think the overall site could be big enough for a Gatwick sized airport. Southwood golf club is situated adjacent to the aerodrome which could contribute to the overall footprint. Wiki says there is a 6000' runway there which I don't think is long enough for a fully laden, fully fuelled 747 to take off and land. I suspect if this was even considered, the whole wider site including the area BAE own would need to be redeveloped from scratch.

Nearly 20 years ago, I did a report about the viability of expanding Farnborough Aerodrome in school. I wrote to them asking various questions and got a very comprehensive answer back. I'll have to dig that out and see what they said.

I just wish they'd get on and let them expand Heathrow, I still haven't see any decent non nimby reason not too. Let them build the third runway and do whatever they want.

The estuary idea is ste. This idea is ste, they're much better off expanding something that already works pretty well and if anything improving the infrastructure from Heathrow into and out of London.
