Car suggestion for high speed economical cruising

While high speed and economical is obviously somewhat incompatible, what car would fulfil the role of being able to cruise comfortably (low wind and road noise) at 180-200 kph with enough power to accelerate quickly back up from 100 kph when lorries are dispensed with (obviously on the autobahn), while being reasonably economical and have a minimum range of 650 km?

BMW 335/535d, Audi A8 4.2 TDI, Mercedes C/E350 CDI...? Any other suggestions?

My recently acquired 730D would do this quite well.

Unless you need the extra space, would you not be better off with one of the smaller BMW's? 1 series excluded...

Possibly, although the 7 is noticably quieter than the 5 or the three, and for me, far more comfortable too- especially if all four seats are being used.

Very good points, I was just offering an opinion as he may have budget restraints. I know I do! Lol.

Double glazing, fridge, fantastic rear air con- 6 vents in mine, great sound system, rear blinds, and with the 16 way adjustable seats they are amazingly comfy.
If you don't need the room- I'm with you completely- a 5 series

Let's keep the budget under 30K euro. My current X3 will do the high speed cruising and is accelerative up 200 kph but is rather noisy and its brick-like aerodynamics means that the range at those speeds are 600-650 km max (67 litre tank)

A 740D would tick all the boxes. What else would you need?

I have a 2002 745 li, but I live in Dubai and don't gave to care about 24mpg!

So far, the A8 (prefer the Quattro option) is out in front but keep them coming!

I'm not up to date on mercs but as I think earlier mentioned do they not have a fast exec bus in the range? What about range rover TDV8?
