Ok, so tinkering with ideas on a sunny Tuesday morning and....

.....with all this talk of hard work finding a nice 964 C2 and the C4s being more plentiful, is it not a plausible and cost effective idea to convert a C4 to 2WD?

I'm guessing it would need a replacement gearbox, prop and front diff removing. (and potentialy new fuel tank to fill the void from losing the front diff??) These items could be sold off to offset the costs etc.

Am I losing the plot and missing something big here?

If it's doable, then why aren't more people doing it or have I answered my own question already confused

ISTR the braking system in a C4 is different. It uses a pump not a servo as the front transaxle takes up the space. Certainly when I start mine up there's various pumping noises for a bit as the system is primed - along with the big '!' warning.

But unless you're competing, the C4 is really just as much fun to drive on the road, and much more stable in the wet and in winter.

It's quite complicated and expensive to do properly from what I've read.

You'd have to change the gearbox, remove front diff/prop shaft, plus also replace the PDAS (traction control system) with the ABS system from a C2.

Unless the price differential really becomes large, it's probably not worth doing.

Thought I might have overlooked something that would be a PITA to sort that is different between the 2 models.

yes

The price differential will never be worth it - there's not usually £5k between a C2 and a C4 and very little, if any, of the conversion cost will be retained in the value of the car once done. If you MUST have a C2 then it's better to stump up and get one. Personally I wouldn't be too bothered unless it's just for track days only.

I suppose it comes down to if you want to do it properly or on the cheap, no real reason you couldn't just take out the front drive shafts & hey presto it's 2WD wink

In all seriousness it can be done quite easily on a 993, but the 4WD system is much more complicated on the 964.
