I fitted a nice new alcantara wheel to my GT3, slightly more padding than the standard old item.

I've got a trackday on Friday, but wanted to ask what gloves you guys use if any at all when tracking your cars with alcantara wheels? Any recommendations?

do you get sweaty hands? if not there's simply no point in them imo, plus you look a bit of a twunt in them smile

Anything with suede on the palms/fingers will give you plenty of grip/purchase. I've a pair of manky ten year old black and grey OMPs that fit like a . . . . redface and are very comfortable.

I would have agreed but I once did a day without a left glove (due to wearing a brace following straining my thumb falling off a motorbike) and my palm got awfully sore from not having the glove's padding (RHD car, hence gearchange hand), and recently I tested the race cars and forgot my gloves and my right thumb got rather sore from rubbing the wheel, nearly to the point of blistering.

I use some like these which are good for grip and also reducing vibration (more relevant to single seater type stuff) due to the octopus-like grip.

I did quite a few track days in my 997RS.1 and never wore gloves. As a result the alcantara steering wheel is badly pilled at this stage so I do think its a very good idea. I will follow this thread with interest.
What, no PH driving gloves??

I am interested to know which wheel you fitted, have you gone non-airbag? How much thicker than standard is the new wheel? Is the alcantara black or dark grey and does it match the headlining material?

Sorry for all the questions, but I was considering a similar move.... BTW, I use Alpine Stars Tech-1 Race Gloves with the standard wheel and they have worked great on track thumbup

Domestic rubber gloves are a great choice.

as slippy said, anything with a suede or brushed leather type finger pads will work well. this really covers any proper race glove so as long as you get something proper you should be just fine.
i would suggest getting a pair with outside seams too. its makes a big difference to comfort long term.
ive got a pair of puma pro fit with outside seams that i really like. i havent seen them listed online anywhere but Puma Avanti are similar and readily available. ive also got a pair of OMP wins top racing gloves that are very comfortable too.

Great, thanks for the advice all.

Demon, those look a bit hardcore for me, need something more comfortable. Love the rubber gloves idea also, can see that catching on..... not!

David, I went for a OEM Porsche padded alcantara wheel. It's similar diameter to the standard wheel, but the soft padding is slightly thicker, hence it's a bit more squishy. I prefer it to the stanard wheel, and it retains the airbag etc...

I have some karting gloves, and bike gloves, but plan to get a set of race gloves also, hence the post. I do have sweaty palms when on track, but not normally on the road. I prefer to have the right equipment and don't really care about the perception of "looking like a tool at a trackday", I'm turning up in a GT3 - having a suit or gloves/boots on is not going to mark me out any further than I already am. Also, nomex gloves give you more of a chance in the event of a fire, so sounds like a plan to me.

Anyone tried the Oakley carbonx range? Apparantly they have good reviews also?

It's approx £1,300 I believe. JZM had a few in for cheap, I picked one up from there. It does match all the standard alcantara in the car for colour.

Another option is to go MA Carbon, similar money and you can get it fully custom. Google them for details. USA based.

OP - Get yourself down to your nearest mountain bike shop and try out the gloves there.

Or how about a golf glove?

I am currently using and would recommend the OMP Wins Evo (pre-curved and exposed seams for comfort and not hugely expensive).
