IAM selling Haymarket products?

I have a query about something one of my colleagues has just told me about.
Last month she was changing her details with the IAM over the phone. At the end of the call, the representative asked her if she wanted to sign up for a trial subscription to Autocar magazine - 6 free issues, then cancel the subscription if she didn't want to keep receiving them.
Fancying a few free mags, she agrees and gives her credit card details to the IAM phone handler, intending to cancel the sub before the end of the trial period.
Fast forward a few weeks, she notices that the subscription fee has been taken from her account before the trial period is up. 'No bother' she thinks, I'll just give them a call and let them know of their mistake and it'll all be sorted out in due course.
Expecting a fairly straight forward call with the IAM, she was more than a little suprised to be told by a rather brusque woman that the IAM never recommends or sells anything on behalf of any third companies and that she (my colleague) basically must have imagined the whole episode!
Cue a call to Haymarket/Autocar - they confirm that she did indeed sign up to a trial subscription, and that the code on their files to show where this was generated reads 'IAM'.
A further call to the arsey woman at IAM results in flat denials and 'we now consider this matter closed'. My colleague is now pursuing this with Haymarket - not because of the money (they have already agreed to refund, good folk that they are), but just to find oit what is going on.
Knowing that there are quite a few IAM people floating about on here and the obvious connections with Haymarket, I was just wondering if anyone had a clue what is happening here? A little backhanded moneymaking scheme on the back of subscription referrals somehow? Or just cackhanded staff cockup/misunderstanding?

The IAM should have given the member the name and number of who to contact at Haymarket so the issue could be quickly resolved and it seems from your post that did not happen !!
IAM HQ are now aware of this and hopefully will be able to pass on the info should the need arise again

IAM woman didn't give any details of who to contact at Haymarket, quite the opposite, she completely denied the existence of any 'referral' scheme and got quite shirty about it too. As did the woman's 'operations director'.
Why would they deny all this I wonder? Fairly standard practice these referrals no?

She queried this actually - they called back and said they had checked the call log and said that no reference was made to the trial subscription offer.Subject Access Request for the info?
I wondered if the original call handler had transferred the call to their own mobile phone or something, in order to avoid the call being recorded?
