Still on the hunt for a big family car with 7 seats and we like the Santa Fe for it's "value-for-money"...but is it?
Given the badge I was expecting 2006/7 models to be well under £10k but at reasonable mileage (40-50k) they seem to be holding out around the £11k mark!
I guess supply might be a factor but still, seemed steep to me.
Anyone got any experience of these and any thing I need to look at when inspecting?

We have an 03 one and it's been good to us over the last 5 years or so. It's ok to drive, done a few long trips to lakes and scotland with and without a caravan on the back and it takes everything. The 1.9 TDI's will return 50mpg on a run and they are faily cheap to service/repair.
My 4 young kids have helped test the interior to destruction!
Always said I wouldn't want and MPV but when you need 6 or 7 seats they are the best option. New shape Galaxy is probably within budget too and they are alledgedly a better drive.

I've noticed the same. Hyundai/Kia see themselves as equal to the big mainstream brands these days, not inferior.Are dealers just trying to keep prices artificially high? What's the WBAC trade in price for a similar car?

I am not disgusted by the idea of having a people carrier (and like the SMax) but bizarrely the wife hates them.

I have a mate who works at a Hyundai dealer and also has a Santa Fe. He first purchased one when the mechanics told him how reliable they'd been. He bought an ex-demo and used it for horse boxes etc for about 3 years or so until the diff seized and the gearbox had a problem. Both replaced under warranty and now well over 100k miles on it at about 5 years old with absolutely nothing else wrong with it at all.
With the exception of a slightly annoying fuel consumption (I think he mentioned high teens but can't be certain) both he and his wife absolutely love it.
He also told me the scrappage scheme was awesome for them. Not just selling cars but also lifting the profile of the brand. People who dismissed them as "Korean crap" then saw a cheap car with a 5 year warranty. Now people are 2 or 3 years into ownership with no breakdowns or cars falling apart and are actually coming back to buy a second or third one.

Totally agree - the market determines the price. But some manufacturers do control the supply of used models more tightly than others. I'd be interested to know if the cars actually sell at dealer prices, or if they only sell with a lot of discount and incentives.

How deep seated is the S-Max hate? After test driving quite a few 4x4's and big estates my wife ended up with an S-Max despite not wanting a Ford at the start of the car hunting process. I am not disgusted by the idea of having a people carrier (and like the SMax) but bizarrely the wife hates them.
i have an older santa fe (04) bought after advice about its reliability and towing prowess. its been a great car and i would have a new(er) one tomorrow. its never missed a beat. the original clutch lasted to about 92k despite me towing with it for 20k miles with a near 2 tonne rig.
the clutch was 650 fitted at a main dealer as its a fairly big job, some clutch centres quoted 550 and hadnt done one before so main dealer got it back.
it does decent mpg, prob 40 on a run, and 30ish round town. fairly rugged and robust, very comfortable for decent mileage runs in it. loads of room, and also fairly cheap to insure. my friend was a mechanic at a main dealer and told me that they are extremely reliable with regards to engine, transmission etc.

A year or so back I recommended (yes very un piston head like!) friends of mine buy a Kia Carens (an 08 one so still under warranty - though I think that was 5 yrs rather than 7).
Before I get flamed - they were looking at cars like Zafiras, etc!
I'm always nervous about recommending a car and I generally don't do it.
A year later - 08 Carens are going for pretty much what he paid for his and they love it. Nothing has gone wrong in it so far and I feel it has passed the 'test'!
Do you need a 4x4 7 seater? If not you could do a lot worse than a 7 seater Carens (though the +2 seats at the back are very small and more for occasional use.

We bought a Hyundai Tucson and they seem to have gone up for similar cars since we bought one!
I don't you can go too far wrong with any of your choices btw - just make sure the car you pick is a good un.

I bought a 57 plate santa fe cdx 7 seater auto just under 4 years ago with 12000 miles on the clock. It was when the second hand car market was very slow and i picked it up from a dealer for £13500. It proved to be a great deal.
She now has 45000 miles on her and the only problem was an EGR valve just replaced under warranty.
The auto box saps a lot of power and it is not a precise change. Seems to take its time to decide when exactly to change up etc but you get used to it. When loaded up with roof box for family holiday, she was fairly gutless especially overtaking so i had it mapped and that helped. Mpg went from 27mpg to 31mpg on average runs with mid 30's achievable on a run.
It's great in winter conditions and sure footed on continental tyres but the steering is light. Wife loves it and hasn't wanted anything else. Not as refined as the xc90 but possibly more reliable from what I have read. I would recommend the manual if you could as the fuel economy is much much better. They hold their value for good reason imho.
