History of the GTi?

OK, so I believe that Maserati were the first to use the term "GTi" for a fuel injected model in the early '60s with the 3500GTi, but was the Golf the next one in '76? Or were there any others inbetween?

Also, what was the next along after the Golf? My guess would be the car I was ferried about in as a kid, Citroen's CX 2400 GTi. Think they had sold Maserati by this stage though, so maybe the use of the name is just a coincidence
