Okay, I've had the car about 2 months now and done a few long stretches - last one a 600 mile round trip Leeds to Portsmouth. A full tank on motorway miles seems to be getting me about 220 - 230 miles. On town driving I'm down to about 170 -180 - more stopping therfore more temptation for quick take offs!
Is this about right for a 5 litre? Not that petrol is a main concern really with this kind of car. Incidentally I've only used Optimax.
Now with oil, I hardly seem to use any at all. I am measuring from the dipstick and not the dashboard gauge of course. I 've read reports of 1000 miles or less per litre. Perhaps mines an efficient one.

This equates to similar to what I just got - 18mpg (in normal commute driving). Your figures sound right for a 5.0 litre, but not for my lowly 4.0 litre. I used to get 23-24mpg in the same conditions ... I'll measure it on some long runs while on holiday - it's supposedly in good tune too ... maybe there's a hole in my tank.

I've had my 500 about 6 weeks now and I've done a few long runs, and I reckon out of a tank full I am getting about 240-260. Which I'm fairly pleased with.

Now thats mainly motorway driving at anything between 40-80mph, including the odd mile or two at crawling pace.

However, shorter journeys and around town, then yeah, the mpg seem to drop drastically. Sometimes getting only around 80-100 miles to half a tank.

Optimax, does seem to give me the best mpg, but I run mine on standard unleaded mostly, as Optimax is hard to find at home.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the fuel consumtion

Oil consumption is going to vary with the grade of oil used.

Ah hah. we posted at the same time ... 0-40 is very thin at high temp so consumption will go up. my completely inexpert opinion is that 500 to 600 miles seems rather soon to burn that much oil. might be worth trying a thicker oil at the next service?

I head for the filling station between the 1/4 and empty mark on the gauge - panick if trip has gone over 220 if have been driving fast for most of that tank.

White Chimp - your figure are pretty similar to mine town and out of town though.

I assume I have been using 0/40 as the dealer gave me an extra litre of mobil with the car - have only used half so far - temp never goes over 90 when fans cut in

I'd take Jellison's comments about the fuel guage very seriously. When I first drove the car and it was indicating 1/8th full (i.e. half way between empty an a quarter) it out of petrol in the outside lane of the M25 during rush hour!! Not a very pleaseant experience!

Do between 150 - 180 on a tank, don't know what that is in mpg, dosen't hardly use any oil at all, using mobil 1 motorsport stuff.

Get about 17-20 mpg on the motorway, 15 or lower around town. This is for a 4 litre Chim.

i've been down to portsmouth and up to ullapool in the north of scotland during the last few weeks in my 96 chim 400, managed to consistently get over 300 miles out of a tank, about 30mpg, and thats with some blasting about too! Think i get about 200 out of a tank around town though. As for oil, used about 1/2 a dipstick of mobil 1 in 1500 miles.

Been up to Oban in Scotland on holiday recently from Staffordshire and managed 27mpg over the whole trip (~1000 miles). But then it was very wet all the time so I was pretty careful.
Only used a little oil, it was just above the MAX level when I started and just below when I checked it at the weekend.

0/40 oil is definately too thin - 15/50 Motorsport Mobil 1 is the one to use - this is still a bit thin for an old design of engine - but my oil consumption is now alot better since switching - still higher than your average Euro box though.

My 97 500 gives me between 22-24 on a long run and 15-17 around town. This seems to be pretty standard for 500's. I would have thought that the 400's would give better figures than some of those quoted here (maybe some heavy right feet out there), mor like 20 round town and 28 on a long run.

as for oil, I tend to go through about 5ltr per 6000 miles, but just had the rocker gaskets replaced so that may improve things a bit. I think that the engines seem to be individual in behavour to some degree, so the oil usage may well vary from engine to engine + depends on how its used. going from Max to Min in 500-600 mile does sound a bit dodgy though.

Had my 500 for over a year now AND always fill up after 200 miles. The fuel gauge can be very dubious in it's accuacy! Outside lane of the M25 and no gas.....nightmare!

Since buying this car a couple months ago, I have been keeping close tabs on my fuel consumption.

I just filled up my Chim 450. Local driving only, and even being a bit playful, I got 19 miles to the gallon. (that is 4.5 liters to the gallon?)

I also went out and checked my oil. After 1,200 miles since service, I can't tell that I have used any oil. The car is running on Mobile 1.
