Any travel agents on here? Last minute deals in October?

We're looking for a half term break somewhere hot but finding it difficult to find things within budget.
I'm tending to think we'd be best to wait until close to the time and look for a last minute deal.
Given that we're now in a double dip recession I would expect people to be keen to do deals... unless all the travel operators have cut capacity.
Any travel industry people on here who have an opinion on this?
