Guys, would this be a bad move ?
Should I be worried about the engine ?
Is the price ok ?

(excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea what the state of play is with the 997 lump)

or shoudl i just get a 996 turbo instead ?

have to say, i do like the simplicity and purity of a basic Artic C2S .. the rear end is delicious

From the pics looks fairly clean, but you can never tell so get a ppi done, peter Morgan is really good. Its priced keenly but has been on for a while so I reckon theres a deal to be had.

You can always stick a warranty on if worried about the rare engine stuff, though an opc one may cost some as they ll want you to fix any issues they find first.

Fair point though cheapest opc 997 C2s is up in the toon at 31.5k...so if the OP is looking for a bargain...

The option I took was not to get too bothered about exact specs and milleage and bought on the best price / most acceptable condition I could find, ppi`d it...confirmed it was pretty much OK, then held back some £ for incidentals...2 yrs on have had to pay out for a couple of things that a warranty would have covered but nothing major...and boy have a had some fun it it!

I think this is a great buy - it's a good spec (and Sports Suspension is still quite rare at this age/price) PLUS, it actually has an OPC warranty until September next year, so at the least you'll have a years worry-free motoring.
Go for it - high mileage 997's aren't a thing to fear smile

Stig, i think its a 3rd party warranty. Could be wrong though. What i do know is the dealer is an absolute gem. Bought my cayenne from him and would trust him 100%

Depends on cash flow. Best move is probably to take none - other than standard servicing - and build up a rainy day fund with warranty payments, IMS upgrade costs etc, that you may never touch. Or to put it another way - if this car makes it to 100k and then goes pop, the total cost of replacement engine from Porsche (with 2 year warranty and all new ancillaries) works out at just 14.5 pence a mile over the life of the car (about half as much as spent on super unleaded). And that is before you consider the uplift in value should you wish to sell the car.

Not much help to short term owners though.....

Nice spec for relatively little money! If it's not an OPC warranty, get the dealer to take some cash off the sticker price, put into an OPC for a 111 point check, put a Porsche warranty it and don't worry about any major bills except wear and tear! biggrin

Someone like Mike at Sports and Classics can insert a camera to assess level of bore scoring - I'm not sure if Peter Morgan does that...but more and more seem to.

Someone like hartech can fit a low temp theromostat to reduce risk of cylinder 6 failure (cooling issue to that cylinder) - others have added an additional radiator from memory to stop potential temperature spikes occuring in the first place during/post hoon.

I suspect a 996 turbo would cost more to run - check Hartech maintenance scheme pricing to see if there is a differential in monthly charge which can be used as a good indication. However soemone of your technical expertise (judging by your 993 stuff) might not find that too big an issue.

i would be cautious of the whole "just put an OPC warranty on it" it could well take £2-3k to become eligible - PPI required as mentioned.

But... it can't have an OPC warranty on it, if its being sold by a non OPC dealer. Also, you can't get an OPC warranty until you've owned it for 90 days and it passes the 111 point check.

Absolutely no idea why that posted three times - thanks MacBook! Sorry everyone.
Anyway, Jackal - I interpreted it as an OPC warranty (and therefore selling-car-on-behalf-of) as the ad said 'warranty until September 2013', not '12 month Warranty included' or similar. No harm, no foul smile Worth clarifying with the vendor.
However, confidence in the dealer is also a serious consideration and as you said, he's a gem, having dealt with you before.
(Good) Word of mouth - best ad there is smile

Looks an ok deal to me, read around about so your going in with your eyes open, as any large purchase, but if the spec suits you, and you like the car and the dealer when you go and visit, then why not buy it and enjoy it.

Good luck.

Some dealers get round this with SOR - hence checking.

Really? Porsche Reading said nothing about the 90 day qualification period on my last car, just pay for the 111 point check (or have a major service which I'd had done by OPC Hatfield the week before I enquired) and buy the warranty!

Yep, they introduced a 90 day window...

For some, having the OPC gives you the peace of mind to allow you to enjoy the car fully. I suspect I would be in that camp with a 997.1 as I'm used to owning new cars (albeit of lesser value). If you are constantly worrying about something going wrong then Porsche ownership will not be enjoyable as it should be.

My advice, G]get one from the OPC, accept the "Porsche tax" that this entails, thrash the nuts off it and if anything breaks take it back, enjoy a coffee and a thrash in a courtesy car while they fix it.biggrin
