Looking at buying a precat that has outrigger problems - not totally shot and it has nine months ticket so nothing urgent, but will need doing sooner rather than later.
Seen a thread a while ago saying that Willow do a good job at a reasonable price and do the work as a body off, which sounds like the right way to go as any other work necessary can be sorted at the same time - although I am sure that nothing else will need doing rolleyes

Do Willow still have a good reputation?

Any other recommendations?

RT Racing in Sheffield have done a 400SE, S3, Tasmin Racer and the White Elephant chassis for me and their work for me has been excellent.

They are also the company that builds the TVR Power OEM Griff & Chimeara chassis, so for Griff and Chim owners surely it has to be a no-brainer!

White Elephant Chassis Before RT

White Elephant Chassis After RT

You can contact Richard at RT Racing on 0114 281 7507

Hope that helps

Wedgeman,
Thanks for the reply. Been lurking for a while and hankering after a Griff for years, but not had any spare cash 'till now, so not really up to speed with who the good guys are, hence the posts on here. Will give Richard a call in the morning.

Ta Leerdam23, will contact both for a chat, Topcats are fairly close so could be a good option, but having said that I dont mind travelling to get a good job done at a fair price.

Olgit,

You could also try Sportmotive, since I am led to believe that TOPCATS use them for their chassis work plus you may even save a quid as well!

Thanks Citizen Smith, will check Sportmotive, as you say could well save a few quid, which could always go towards what ever else needs doing.

Olgit,

No worries, I use to have a 4.3 and regret the day that I ever sold it. Always nice to hear from an enthusiast that,s keen to keep the "best of the breed" on the road.

I appologise to all 4.0 and 5.0 litre owners out there.

If you know the outriggers are shot get them done as soon as you can because generally the rot you can see is only half the story.
And your seatbelt is attached to them so they are a bit important.

Good luck

sportmotive can supply a premade outrigger set, that you can have welded in situ by a local welder, without removing or lifting the body at all

How do they weld the top of the joints without moving the body.

i know that the corner plates are cut differently to permit access, and i recall one plate is loose and must be welded on last to enable access, ive seen it done in their place on a customer car, and it looked absolutely fine.

Clearly all depends on the extent of the rot, but what ive seen looked spot on

ive seen a row of ready made outriggers there, all powdercoated, ready to go

It might be a bit far for you to travel but X Works do the outriggers without a body lift and a nice job they do as well. Could be worth giving them a call and seeing about a price as they were very competitive when I last heard a price.

Just had 500 MoT'd and they commented on how good a job had been done on the outriggers (done by Sportmotive 12 months ago), so thanks to Ian and the guys.

i dropped my car in at ians for a repaint today, they had a car there doing outriggers.

the old ones are cut off flush at the chassis, and ground flat

the angled tubes to the top chassis rails are left with a short stub, and a sleeve joint pressed in the old tube

the new outriggers are , bolted up to the body, and welded in situ the inner corner plates are left off to make access easier

finally, corner plates are welded in .

the new rails are powdercoated already, and the welded areas are finished in zinc/2 pak etc.

Just had my outriggers replaced on my pre-cat Griff by Colin Apps at TVRS Wellington, Somerset. Did a great job and did not have to remove the body which helped keep the cost down. Colin also checked the remaining chassis and wax oiled the whole thing, brilliant.

here are some pics of the original outriggers

I think the main question you have answered yourself, "the body really needs to come off", or how are they going to weld properly around each tube, without getting a "bird s_it" weld on the joint.Getting a mig touch in those tight spots is near on impossible with the body on and where are those hot sparks going whilst welding. I would ask your chosen company's, "If they do it body off and go from there.

Melvyn, it might be worth speaking to Prestige Performance Cars in Melton Mobray if you are in Cambs to see what their options are on out rigger replacement for you as I understand they have a few options now.

Fernhurst TVR have someone to replace out riggers with body in place. They said they cut part of inner wheel arch out and replace out riggers
