I think it is very easy to be given the new style MOT certificate and treat it... well, as a certificate and take it at face value.

I have to say I am a bit confused (probably the Govts fault for not publicising it). It says the current MOT certificates are not proof of a current MOT. You have to look online.

How were the old certificates any more proof than the current ones? Presumably you get both after an MOT pass?

From a practical point, how many peopel are going to be able to check MOT history after they have asked the seller for the V5 code? Not that many in the garnd scheme I imagine.

Forgery was obviously coming a mile off - if anything they should have made them harder to forge.

What they really wanted to do is bin the paper part of an MOT completely, you're lucky you get the white bit of paper now.

Can you check it online with just the reg number? If not, this system is stupid.

Nope, you need a previous MOT number, in which case you can view all MOTs up until the date of that one, or the number from the V5C which lets you see all MOTs.

It's a totally stupid system. You should be able to enter a reg number & get the results but of course you can't! You need a V5 or previous MOT doc number. Hardly easy.

Don't see what's hard about it, fixes the problem of "lost" advisory sheets and it's a great way of weeding out shonky sellers - anyone who won't give you the mot certificate number has something to hide so walk away.

Truthfully I can't see this being anything new. When I was bringing Minis into the US from Britain I can't count how many I saw with valid MoT certificates that I was afraid to test drive.
