The Stig sticking a Porche
Thursday 19th August 2004
Perry McCarthy will return to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB for the pair of races at Brands Hatch this weekend (21/22 August) to handle the VIP car entered by Porsche Cars GB.
The former Grand Prix driver will build on his previous weekend in the VIP car at Brands back in April and is aiming to return to the podium, having finished a fine third last time out.
"I really enjoyed the races in April and that's why I'm so pleased to be back again," he says. "The championship is so professional and everyone is so friendly. That's why I'm happy to be involved again."
McCarthy, who proved a real crowd favourite during the April weekend, hopes that the experience he gained then will boost him this weekend. "Each lap I was processing a bit more information and that was getting increasingly successful. If I've managed to remember some of it, I've got a better platform to build from."
However, McCarthy knows that the racers at the head of the Carrera Cup action are extremely quick. "I've never under-estimated these drivers in these cars. But we'll have loads of fun and try and beat them!"
The Carrera Cup weekend is the start of a varied and busy spell of racing for McCarthy as on subsequent weekends he will race a Group C car at Donington, then compete in the Goodwood Revival Meeting before contesting the Le Mans Endurance Series race at Spa-Francorchamps! "I'm having great fun this year just taking a few drives that I really want to do," he says.
After testing on Friday and qualifying on Saturday at Brands, McCarthy will contest rounds 15 and 16 of the Carrera Cup GB on Sunday (22 August).

Why did it say Ex Stig to race? Has he given up stigging on Top Gear?
Still pretty poor taste in music though
Is it just me or does the new one seem a bit of a smoother driver? Always looks like he's going slower than he actually is, pretty damn skillful!
BCA said:That was actually my point. Looked to me like the old Stig (Perry) was having a load of fun, but when someone's throwing/sliding a car round like that it ain't going to be the quickest way round a lap.

Yeah!
The old stig seemed to be the better driver
Disagree, he appears to be the slower driver of the two (or more) stigs.
No-one any clues as to the identity of the new Stig then?

The driving style is very different between the two, it must be a different bloke. The new one is a smoother driver(normally quicker), but the old one seemed to have better car control and be able to drive smooth if he wanted to. The new stig only ever drives smooth. When he tested the S2000 on the track the new stig was in the wrong gear on one of the bends, you could tell by the cars movement and engine noise, changing gear mind bend in the wet, doesn't seem that good to me. Then again I'm sure he'd whip my arse.
He didn't start race 1 and thus had to start from the back of race 2 with Tim Harvey as company. With a couple of expensive crashes at the start he made good progress and had a terrific ding dong battle with an ex-TVR racer but Harvey was the class of the field.
Touring Cars were excellent and I bumped into VBH in the Carrera Cup hopitality tent first thing, so all in all an excellent day.

According to Perry McCarthy's book, "Flat Out, Flat Broke" Clarkson wanted the anonymous driver to be called "The Gimp". PM said "No" on the basis that he was unlikely to remain anonymous for ever and didn't want forevermore to be called "The Gimp". Eventually they settled on the "Stig". No reason, just did!
