V70 for someone in their 20's?

Im looking at shifting my st220 this week. As a result, im looking for a new car, diesel, with a budget of about 6000, and a build year of about 2004/2005 onwards.
Im looking at 3-series diesels, but what about a d5 v70? I've seen a couple of automatic nice ones, but im not sure they fit the profile of someone my age...
I dont 'need' a big estate or even a family saloon for that matter, i have 0 kids, 0 dogs etc, but i hate small cars and really dislike hatchbacks. There's probably a bit of brand snobbery going on too
I suppose thats why im looking at the v70, 3/5 series, vectra, a4 etc.
Is the V70 D5 lump a fiat unit aswell? Or am i talking out of my arse?

D5 is a Volvo lump, but if you don't need an estate the S60 will be cheaper to run, are cheaper to buy and are more plentiful.
Won't handle anything like the Mondeo does but if you like a nice place to sit while you travel, with a great stereo Volvos rock.
Or just buy one with a T5 engine and enjoy irritating hot hatches.
Ignore the age thing, if you like the car buy it and enjoy it.

The D5 is a Volvo engine, not Fiat thankfully....
I'm a recent D5 convert, and my 20's are a fair way back, but it's a pretty willing car and very comfortable. Mine is 10yrs old with 230k miles and still goes very well. I like it (although it's not as quick as the T5).
I'd be wary of autos though, they can be troublesome - I'm not ruling it out, just be careful.

The V70 is quite a big car - certainly larger than a 3 series. I did 60,0000 miles in a V50 2.0l diesel until July and was pleased with it. It's a modest size and was comforable and went pretty well. I chopped it in for a V60 D5, which goes like the clappers but is only 3-4 mpg heavier on fuel. So what about a V50 with the 2.4 engine? That would seem to tick the right boxes.
I had one for a few years (V70 D5 auto).
I've got 2 kids and a dog though.
Excellent cars if you need a family barge but I would say don't do it. They can be hellishly complex if they go wrong, parts are expensive and they are a bit of a blunt tool in the driving dept. Not bad by any means just not in anyway exciting.
I recently had to chop mine in due to imminent gearbox failure and now have a BMW E61 Msport which blow the Volvo away in terms of driving dynamics. The Volvo did carry more stuff though, and the stereo was better, and the seats more comfy.

I'm not sure how company fleet fodder "Sierra of the 2000's" is a better image than the Volvo?
Nothing against a 3-Series diesel but I can't imagine anyone buying one for the image.

do it. My dad has a 2004 V70 D5 as his work horse, and I have borrowed it many a time. I'm still stunned how much those 5 pot diesels sound like the 5 pot petrols (from inside the cabin at least)

They're great cars. Bought one when I was 25 and had it four four years. Had the 163hp s60 d5 manual. 48mpg, loads of torque, good sound, good reliability.
It's the only car I regret selling. Seats ans stereo are amazing.
The handling is ok, only downsides are a terrible turning circle and limited rear space for a car of its size.

I'd go for an S60 over the V70 if you've not got loads to lug around. Better looking, cheaper to buy etc etc. The D5 is good for a diesel, but I'd choose the T5 over that or the 2.0T if you're just after a 'quick', comfortable car to much the miles. I had an S60 before 25. I really enjoyed it too. No kids, no stuff to lug around (I had an MX5 before that), I just loved the S60's design and engineering. It was a pretty good drive too.

I had a V70 T5 at 18. Looked boring and plain from the outside but was hiding just shy of 280hp. Was great fun! Never got any attention from the police, yet could bait boyracers into racing "That grandad in the volvo innit blud!" and then destroying them.
Corners weren't it's strongest point, but it made up for that by being a super comfortable mile muncher. As said above it had a great stereo too.

Agree with all that! They really are one of the most comfortable ways to travel.
We went to Norfolk last weekend, Wifey picked me up at lunchtime outside work, and 2.5 hours later we arrived. She was going to let me drive, but the old brute (10 year old V70 T5) was so comfortable she just kept going.
