Is an MLM simply someone who uses a lane other than the inside lane ?
My thinking is that it is someone that just moves out from lane one for no reason, or never moves back, has no concept of other traffic and generally has zero awareness.
Are you still an MLM if you "make progress", check your mirrors and are aware of what is around you but don't drop back into lane 1 straight away every time, I tend to drop back in if I know that I wont need to come out for a bit, sometimes it just seems pointless but I feel guilty and very un-PH if I dare stay out longer than I need, I sometimes see people jibbing in and out every 50 yards, i think there is perhaps a balance to be struck.
Also, a motorway copper told me once if challenging the land speed record in a T5 on an empty motorway for some reason they drive in the middle lane as it gives a better view and enables more options if something goes wrong like if a tyre goes or there is something in the road.
Also, does anybody else when passing a slower vehicle with a high speed differential give an extra lanes berth, you know, going up a long hill past a knackered horsebox doing 25 mph or do you slow down, not sure what the IAM line is on this but I reckon checking mirrors thoroughly and moving potentially two lanes, for me it seems common sense to create a bigger margin of error, having had in the past people move out with no obvious reason, a Lada Riva on the A5 once, driven by a bloke of about 80 changed lanes with no indication on me, I was doing 80 and him probably 60.

Keep left unless overtaking.
This.I only stay out if I am going to overtake another vehicle within 10 seconds and there is no faster traffic behind, otherwise back to lane 1.
At night with no traffic around if I'm making progress I'll move out to L3 to clear heavies in L1 as they often wander out of lane but again only if there isn't faster traffic and always coming back to 3 if not overtaking.
It's a little broader than the title of MLM in my view as it's anyone who has no conception of lane discipline. Some of these aforementioned just gravitate to the middle for multiple reasons.

Being in the middle lane in these circumstances also means you require softer steering inputs which, at higher speeds, is more favourable. Especially if you're a pussy.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
