The Lakes / Windermere

Hi all,

Considering spending a long weekend in Windermere for a bit of blasting around. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a decent hotel(?). Im not a fan of holiday inn style rooms but don't want to spend a fortune either. Ideally a place with character, a bit of charm....and a bar. Had a look online but its hard to work out what's crap and what's not.

Go to Keswick, get any b&b try the Goulash in the Dog and Gun......heaven, and pukka roads

The Gilpin Lodge near Windermere is excellent. Get a suite with a hot tub. You'll have to book well in advance it's very popular.

Broad Oaks Hotel, at Troutbeck - just up the road from Windermere. Really nice place, though they sometimes have weddings on at the weekend in which case the whole place will be block-booked.

That's the problem with people almost in the Wirral, no sense of adventure!

Try The Hare and Hounds in Bowland Bridge near Crosthwaite. Fantastic pub and restaurant with a modern block at the back with rooms. The food in the restaurant is absolutely superb, the Hare of the Dog beer that is brewed just for them is really good beer and there is a large car park at the side.

It is convenient for Bowness, Windermere, Kendal and Ambleside but most places around the lakes are within an hour at most. Beware the hedges - really easy to get scratches from branches on the narrow roads.

I managed to grze and then crack 2 alloys on the wrynose and hardknott passes - be careful. It's easy to scrape the chin spoiler and underbody tabs on some of the tight passes. Look out for jagged rocks at the side of the road too....

The old England in the heart of Bowness is lovely also Langdale chase has stunning views of the Lake ( it was featured on the lakes tv program ) for something slightly different Windermere boutique and Aphrodite hotels are popular.
We spend most weekends in Bowness as we are only 30 minutes away and have a boat in the marina, let me know if you vist...will treat you to a drink onboard!

Damn, I was there last week. Should have mentioned it - I like drinking on boats

I'd hope Windermere is not like when I went to Conniston... all the pubs shut at bang on 11 - very dull

I've stayed here and the food is excellent. Aston friendly too with off road(as in safe not 4x4)parking.

I always prefer a good B&B vs a hotel and I've stayed with the Relph's at their Yew Tree Farm http://www.borrowdaleherdwick.co.uk/ in Borrowdale. A warm welcome, comfortable rooms, and a brief walk up the valley to a cracking pub that serves their Herdwick lamb as well as great beers. Strongly recommended.

If it's good enough for Price Charles, It's good enough for me.
