Hi, i have a 1998 2.5 boxster and lately its been abit weird. I have not been using it very much due to the terrible weather (done about 20 miles this month) and now when i use it it wont idle when cold. The minute i take my foot off the gas the revs drop it cuts out and does this everytime untill the engine is warm? the car drives fine no knocks, bangs etc but it has also the once kicked a whack of smoke out when being started but has never done that before or since the 4-5 times ive tried it (truth be told im scared to start it to often now incase something goes bang!) im not very mechinical so please any help will be gratfully received as I know my garage will hit me for any work on the car and i just cant afford to get it done right now! help??!!

The early Boxsters with mechanical throttle, like yours, have an idle control valve on the side of the throttle body which can get gummed up. Try removing and cleaning it, and while you are in there, clean up the throttle butterfly and around the edge of the opening where it seats.
