Is it possible to have a conversation about how PH wants football threads to run, and be moderated please?

Well quite, Andy.

And if some contributors spout bile and invective with their posts, (note, I'm not criticising an opinion here) what, if anything, should be done?

It's all very well saying 'ignore it' however after months of same old same old, elsewhere on PH these type of contributors would be warned and ultimately banned.

To be clear, I'm not talking about an opinion, I'm talking about how it is delivered.

Indeed, and that would apply to all. Looking at the thread, it is very one sided abuse wise.

Oh indeed.

And is there a reason for that, as far as you can tell. Not wearing your blue hat.

There is no blue hat on. Poster X posts something poster Y does not agree with. Either argue the point, or ignore. Piling in with the usual insults from the usual suspects just turns the thread into a pile of manure. Sure, poster X could word his posts a bit better, but the fact remains that what he writes is in no way as abusive, and constantly I sulking as what others write.

The abuse and insults are why it was closed.

See, you're not quite right there. It's not about opinions differing, as I believe on the particular subject we were all of the same opinion.

With regards to you saying 'x could word their posts a bit better' therein lies the rub, and the point of this thread. I would also say that you have somewhat mastered understatement there. It is, in truth, a consistent barrage of bile. I don't think it would be tolerated by the moderators elsewhere on PH.

Well, I don't agree. Differing opinion is not against the rules. Abuse is.

IMVHO what happens on onr of the forums is often repeated to a greater or lesser extent in all the football forums, however one forum was made the focus, not helped by poster X types constantly looking for an argument and looking to big themselves up at every turn. I have said it before, introduce an ignore function so that it is very easy to ignore those posters you want nothing to do with, it will serve 2 purposes, stop yourself getting irritated and eventually make the poster x types disappear when they realise that their posts are not even getting published as they are on everyones ignore list

Interesting to see that only poster X types are getting the blame. You either accept that the constant abuse is a problem, or you do not. Someone simply having a different view is not an excuse, I'm afraid. If you want to ignore people, do so.

Poster X types covers a very broad range of posters, unless you a refering to a particuar type? I was ignoring a large number of posts and at times had to log off because of the frustrations caused by some, even the deliberate incorrect spelling of other members names etc!!

Isn't it? I thought you wanted to talk about how threads should go, and how they should be moderated, rather than specific stuff that caused the Liverpool thread to be shut?

Either way, I've said my bit. I'm oot.

If you don't like someones posting style why not just learn to ignore them, surely you don't need an ignore function for that.

I ignore loads.

Exactly what I do, as I said it has caused me to log off before so that I do not repond to certain people which is why I have not responded to certain posters for a long while and others very sparingly. Just saddens me that on a night when finally some folks reached a limit of patience the dear old poster X types had to keep digging and ultimately make PH a site that I am seriously considering walking away froam after a long association with it frown

Posters take the football threads too seriously, I can honestly say that all the time I have been posting on them no one has wound me up enough to start calling people names.

Well except Blib but that's expected. smile

The threads will remain the same as long as poster X is blamed. Poster X is not the respason it was closed.

It's not what he posts, it's how he posts it.

I actually agree with him quite often, his posts can sometimes be educated & informed. Then all of a sudden he drops something ridiculous in which he knows is provocative and is done to get a reaction and wind people up.

I don't agree with the abuse that gets hurled the other way but I can understand it.

But at the end of the day it wouldn't happen if he didn't post in the style that he does.

All well and good saying ignore it but it's a constant regular barrage.

There is nothing wrong with an opinion, but there is something wrong with deliberately posting to provoke a reaction, and of course in hurling abuse back the other way.
