Track Day Car Options - Advice
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Newbie on here. Have a Lotus Elise 111r, which I do track, but but it's mint and I want to keep it that way, so want another car for track day use also that I can share with friends and would appreciate your advice.
I would prefer a rear wheel drive car but would consider FWD also. I am looking at a smallish budget initially, therefore up to about £2.5k, looking for a completed car not a project.
My initial thoughts were
BMW E30 / E36, Clio 172, Golf VR6, Celica GT, Porsche 944, Toyota MR2
Any thoughts? again handling, reliability and road legal setup is key
Appreciate your advice

Good shout, I had forgotten about Mx5's.
Can you ring any more bhp out of MX5's sensibly without spending a fortune?. I think the 1.8 is about 130bhp standard?
The MR2 mk2 is gonna be quite a bit heavier than the Mx5 I'm guessing, Would the one to go for be the GT or Turbo for track?. Again can you mod these for more bhp at a relatively low cost ?
Would appreciate feedback on good and bad points, mechanically & handling wise for these two options
cheers

I'm sure the E36 never came in 330i guise. Wasn't the 328i the range-topper, excluding the M3 (which incidentally are looking like stonking value right now)?
yes.the M3 was available in 3.0 and 3.2, below that was the 328.
I really like my 328 but it seems to be spending far too much time sat on the drive at the moment
(not reliability issues i might add!)Nissan 200sx 2.0 S14 model is worth looking at.
Does not take much to turn into a decent track car.
My one is 240 bhp, LSD, nice neutral handling with coilovers and up-rated anti roll bars the handling is superb. I also use it on the road as it has working aicon, leather etc and have retained standard looks. Might be up for sale next month.

flam,
I have the very same dilemma as you, I love my VX and am very nervous about tracking it. So I'm thinking (always thinking) about selling it and my wifes Mk3 MR2 and getting an S2000 to use during the week and a Mk2 MR2 for the track (I just prefer them). I would probably soon fall out of love with the VX using it every day, hence the complete change and I could sell it happily thinking of it as the best car I've ever owned (before too many things need replacing through age).
As for your question about MR2's, it's widely accepted that the Mk3 handles much better than a Mk2, I just prefer the Mk2, plus you may be able to get a reasonable turbo car, where as to get that kind of pace in a Mk3 would require significant investment.
If I do go down the dedicated track route, I'll be spending what ever I get for the Mk3 we have, minus a grand or so. That should allow me to get a reasonable Mk2 and track prep it with better suspension, tyres, roll bar and geo.
