Cheap commuting car needed....

Where would your money go and why?
Preferable engine size 1.2, 40+ MPG, post 05 plate, petrol, any other alternatives for a car that will be kept until it is scrapped?
Just scrapped my T plate fiesta due to rust after 8 years, would the fiat hold up as well?

Surely one of the most pointless expressions ever? What it is, is a Fiesta so it's about as nippy as a 1.25 Fiesta. 
That said I'd probably go for the Fiesta since the OP will be looking at the sluggish 1.1/1.2 8v engines in the Panda for his budget. I do like the Panda though, and it should be a little more economical if you are desperate for every last mpg.

No. Seriously, no, it's a simple thing that doesn't break, if it does it'll be cheap and easy to fix. At your budget, you'll be looking at a pre-facelift model, I believe the only material difference is the wing mirrors; the ones on the car you'll be looking at will be tiny. As stated above, the Panda is completely unpretentious, it makes no bones about being completely uncool and as such is much cooler than any Fiesta.
Had a good look over the 1.2 panda today and was impressed, that impressed I've bought it!. Considering its 7 years old it looks in very good condition underneath for 46000 miles. It drove well enough, gearbox was precise and the interior wasn't as bad as the photo suggested. Seats were comfier than the fiesta. Cheap, hassle free motoring....I hope!

Good purchase, I loved mine and only got shot of it because kid number 2 was coming. Bags of character, great little car. We regularly done camping trips to the highlands, it swallowed all luggage with ease, surprisingly big inside.

Did the same in mine a few weeks ago - 1800 miles in a week, with 72mpg out of the tank around the Highlands!
It is almost Tardis like. When I popped the bonnet I couldn't believe how much space there was, looks an easy car to spanner on if needed.Papa Hotel said:

Wuss.We get all four of us AND all my wife's crap in ours.
We often use it in preference to my mondeo as it's easier to reach the kids when needed.

Hey, if you can fit a 4-man tent, a double buggy, clothing and equipment for 2 adults, 1 toddler and one baby for a long weekend into the boot of a Panda, please, I'd love to see photos. We coped just fine when it was just the three of us and the rear seat could be put down but a second baby seat and a larger buggy did it for the Panda. It put up a glorious fight but sadly it was never going to win. We get all four of us AND all my wife's crap in ours.

Below was just two people for the trip above! Not much room left!

Easy.Buggy replaced by two slings. Rear facing car seat in front, load of soft bags in footwell. Tent in boot, more bags on top.
Alternatively, double buggy fits in boot. Soft bags stuffed around it and in footwells. Tent on roof rack.
I love the space in my car, but the panda is a sodding tardis.
