Evening. I'm selling a car privately for a garage apprentice to have a shed to work on. He is 16. Can the ownership be transferred into his name or must it go into his parents' until he obtains a licence?

So this could be interesting.... Say for example I register a car to my son aged 9. I insure it to me and drive it, set off a Gatso, so they would NIP my son. He doesn't reply to the NIP. He is also below the legal age for prosecution... scratchchin

There must be a minimum age for vehicle ownership?

I don't think there is. I had a car registered to me when I was 16 and there's the 12 year old with a Jag on here.

You can't be the main insured driver on a car you don't own though.

Also, why do you think there must be a minimum age?

The registered keeper on the V5 is nothing to do with car ownership.

A baby can effectively own a car. There should be no lower age limit on making someone a registered keeper.

Cars on PCP are normally registered to the person who has taken out the finance, not the finance company.

Registered yes but they are not the legal owner. I was agreeing with the post 'The registered keeper on the V5 is nothing to do with car ownership'.

I am the registered keeper of both our cars but my wife owns the Polo.
Until something breaks on it that is, then it becomes mine again until it`s been fixed...

Debate on the subject here... http://www.policespecials.com/forum/index.php?/top...

Ah fair enough. Thought you couldn't to stop fronting, guessing it only applied to the registered keeper maybe?

I realise the distinction between ownership and RK, and I've seen this 'dodge' about putting a child as the RK before - IIRC the snag is that a child can't sign the V5, so the adult who does sign becomes responsible.

I am the only driver insured on my lease car (policy in my name and at my expense), I am neither the owner nor registered keeper of the car.

You can insure a car as while neither being the RK or the owner. I own our Mondeo and I am the RK. It's insured in my wifes name (with me as a named driver) as she uses it more than me. The insurance doc says she is neither the owner or keeper.

There is nothing wrong with doing this, as it it is insured and registered exactly as its it used.
